2009 Record: 3-9 C-USA Record: 1-7 2010 Returning Starters: 10: 7 Offense, 3 Defense

Coach: Bob Toledo (At Tulane 9-27, 3 years)

Offensive Coordinators: Dan Dodd Defensive Coordinators: Steve Stanard

2010 Tulane Players to Watch: QB Ryan Griffin, WR DJ. Banks, LB Trent Mackey, FS Shakiel Smith, C Andrew Nierman

2010 Tulane Strengths:
Tulane has speed and depth – something it hasn’t had in the past three seasons. The offensive line is steady, as is QB Griffin. but a move to a spread-style offense and a new cast of running backs are wildcards. The defense adds several new starters but has more talent than in recent memory.

2010 Tulane Weaknesses:
Special teams haunted the Green Wave in 2009. With an unproven kicker and punter, combined with more young players on protection, it looks like trouble again.

2010 Tulane Offense:

Tulane lost its two marquee skill players receiver Jeremy Williams and running back Andre’ Anderson, who both signed NFL contracts this spring – but the bright spot is the return of quarterback Ryan Griffin. For the first time in Bob Toledo’s era, the Green Wave headed into summer with the same quarterback who finished the previous season. Griffin started his first game in October as a redshirt freshman. He completed 141 of 222 passes for 1,382 yards and nine touchdowns in nine games and threw six interceptions. His job should get easier now that Toledo’s West Coast scheme has vertical-ized. The tweaked offense plays to Tulane’s 2010 strengths – an accurate passer with a deep, talented receiving corp. Tulane returns much of the line and added an influx of receivers. The leading returning receiver is Casey Robottom, who had 50 receptions for 584 yards in ‘og. The Green Wave lost fullback Antoine Duplessis before spring to an undisclosed university matter. That forced Toledo’s hand in changing the offense, which will expand the role of the slot receiver.

2010 Tulane Defense:

Tulane’s defense did not undergo major changes from its 4-3 base. The staff, on the other hand, has been shaken up with some new coaches. Tom Hayes, a former NFL assistant, takes over the secondary. Former Nebraska and pro linebacker Doug Colman leads the linebacker unit. Last season, injuries and a shallow depth chart forced players into unnatural positions and contributed to a total defense ranked 102nd nationally. Two experienced players -linebacker Trent Mackey and defensive end Dezman Moses – sat on the sidelines in 200g because of NCAA transfer rules, but they will be starting in the fall. Mackey, a sophomore who began his career at Duke, is already one of the defensive leaders. Moses, a left defensive end who played 15 games at Iowa, led the team with two sacks in the spring game. The return of the team’s interception leader, cornerback Phillip Davis, bulks up a secondary that led Conference USA in pass defense (218.0 yards allowed per game). With the existing talent and a host of hybrid linebacker-safety and linebacker-lineman types coming in, the 2010 product should be an upgrade.

2010 Tulane Special Teams:

Much is new in this department with a new coordinator – Doug Lichtenberger, who is also the tight ends coach – and a new kicker/punter in redshirt freshman Ryan Rome. The kick and punt returners – D.J. Banks and Casey Robottom – are experienced.

2010 Tulane Predictions:

Tulane is trying to claw out of the bottom of the Conference USA standings, but there is still a long way to go. The shift in offense is a plus, and new coaching on defense should help the problems with run defense. This team is better than last year, but improving enough for a bowl doesn’t seem likely.
