2009 Record: 5-7 C-USA Record: 3-5 2010 Returning Starters: 16: 9 Offense, 5 Defense, Kicker, Punter

Coach: Todd Graham (At Tulsa 26-14, 3 years)

Offensive Coordinators: Herb Hand, Chad Morris Defensive Coordinators: Paul Randolph. Keith Patterson

2010 Tulsa Players to Watch: QB G.J. Kinne, RB Jamad Williams, HB Charles Clay, C Trent Dupy, WR Damaris Johnson, S DeAundre Brown

2010 Tulsa Strengths:
Kinne is back and so are three of his most productive receivers. Assuming Kinne stays protected, the Tulsa passing game should be astrength. Morris was brought in as assistant offensive coordinator with hopes of bringing aspark and fast pace back to the Golden Hurricane.

2010 Tulsa Weaknesses:
Last year, Tulsa’s green offensive line allowed more sacks than all but two teams In the nation. Four of those linemen return, so they should improve. But any regression – or the status quo – would hurt. The Golden Hurricane also is inexperienced at linebacker.

2010 Tulsa Offense:

For the fIrst time in his tenure at Tulsa, head coach Todd Graham has a returning starting quarterback. Junior dual-threat G.J. Kinne (more than 3,000 total yards and 27 touchdowns) should provide plenty of points and highlights in the no-huddle offense. Perhaps Kinne’s most dangerous weapon is wideout Damaris Johnson, who has two of the top four all-purpose yardage season totals in Conference USA history. Charles Clay and A.J. Whitmore were also among Tulsa’s most productive receivers in 2009. If Oklahoma transfer Jameel Owens is granted eligibility this year, Tulsa’s passing game could be even stronger. Clay is also reliable in goal-line situations as a runner. He led the team with seven rushing touchdowns last season. Jamad Williams had the most carries behind Kinne. Sophomore center Trent Dupy leads a developing offensive line that returns three other starters, including left tackle Tyler Holmes and left guard Clint Anderson.

2010 Tulsa Defense:

No defense in Conference USA allowed fewer rushing touchdowns (nine) than Tulsa’s did a season ago. Back from that group are ends Odrick Ray (three sacks in the spring game) and Cory Dorris. Defensive tackle Gabe McGee played in 11 games last season. Linebacker is different. Four of the six players from last season’s rotation are gone. It would have been fIve, but Tanner Antle returned after a brief hiatus during the spring. Curnelius Amick, a junior, has played in 26 games. New secondary coach Van Malone should get plenty of competition within the team because eight of Tulsa’s 22 signees played in the defensive backfIeld. Safeties DeAundre Brown, who had an interception in the spring game, and Dexter McCoil return as starters. John Flanders has spent some time at the safety and corner positions.

2010 Tulsa Special Teams:

Junior kicker Kevin Fitzpatrick is about as dependable as they come. He made 13 of 14 held goal attempts last year and 42 of 44 extra points. But he missed three kicks in the spring game. Senior punter Michael Such ranked among the top 10 nationally in yards per punt. Johnson, a versatile punt returner, also was among the nation’s top 10.

2010 Tulsa Predictions:

It could be a bounce-back season in Tulsa as long as the offensive line grows. Graham has a capable quarterback to run his hurry-up offense, and the special teams unit is solid. The defense is sturdy, relative to the conference. Consider, also, that last year wasn’t as bad as it seemed. Sure, it was the program’s fIrst losing season since 2004, but the Golden Hurricane lost three games by a com~ined 12 points. Better fInishes and a better turnover margin would help. Tulsa also has a slightly gentler schedule than last season – the Golden Hurricane get a chance to impress a national TV audience against rebuilding Notre Dame in October – so it should return to bowl contention.
