2009 Record: 5-7 MWC Record: 3-5 2010 Returning Starters: 17: 8 Offense, 8 Defense, Kicker

Coach: Bobby Hauck (At UNLV: 1st year)

Offensive Coordinators: Rob Phenicie Defensive Coordinators: Kralg Paulson

2010 UNLV Players to Watch: QB Omar Clayton, WR Phillip Payne, OT Matt Murphy, CB Quinton Pointer

2010 UNLV Strengths:
There’s ample talent, led by Clayton and some newcomers to the running game. Recent Mountain West history shows a new staff can iniect Immediate enthusiasm into a program.

2010 UNLV Weaknesses:
The schedule is brutal with 13 games, including nine opponents who played in bowls last season and trips as far east as West Virginia and as far west as Hawaii. Longstanding defensive woes could hinder the Rebels’ progress, and the offense must learn a new system under Hauck.

2010 UNLV Offense:

When the spread offense nrst appeared, most teams couldn’t convert fast enough, hiring coaches who could bring in the latest and greatest version of the scheme. Welcome to the land of dismantling the spread. Bobby Hauck, the only new coach in the Mountain West this season, would love to bring more downhill running looks to the Rebels. That wasn’t UNLV’s identity under Mike Sanford, who was nred last season after a career 16-43 mark. Hauck inherited a purely spread team with three quarterbacks schooled in the offense, led by injuryprone senior Omar Clayton. He has 4,742 career yards, sixth on UNLV’s career list. His top target is junior Phillip Payne, who caught 58 passes for 661 yards last season in the shadow of all-time Mountain West and school receiving leader Ryan Wolfe. UNLV’s passing game is established enough to excel, even with Wolfe gone, but Hauck would like to improve the running game, which was a key disappointment a year ago. The supposed best back of the bunch, senior Channing Trotter, found himself third on the post-spring depth chart behind junior C.J. Cox and redshirt freshman Bradley Randle. Incoming freshmen Tim Cornett and Dionza Bradford will be given every chance to contribute. Offensive tackle Matt Murphy, an NFL draft prospect, leads a line with four returning starters. Evan Marchal, one of the league’s biggest players at 6-7, 320, lines up on the right side.

2010 UNLV Defense:

This area needs the most attention after the Rebels placed 115th nationally last season in total defense. The post-spring depth chart did not list four returning starters at the top of their positions. The 4-3 base defense remains, but there is little identity on the defensive line. A pass rush is one of UNLV’s biggest priorities after producing only 15 sacks last season. If there’s a positive on defense, it’s cornerback Quinton Pointer, the team’s top returning tackler. Hauck likes the skill he inherited in the secondary, including Mike Grant, who shifted from cornerback to free safety in the spring.

2010 UNLV Special Teams:

Hauck will personally oversee special teams, and there are extensive needs, with the exception of kick returner Deante Purvis (a 23.3-yard average) and long-time placekicker Ben Jaekle. Top punting candidate Brendon Lamers, who punted only four times last season, could face a challenge from local prospect Nolan Kohorts in the falL The punt return game last year was nearly nonexistent.

2010 UNLV Predictions:

Not much is expected in a transition season under Hauck, who took Montana to three Football Championship Subdivision title games in seven seasons. In addition to installing his kind of offense Hauck will look to erase the inconsistency that marked Sanford’s tenure. The Rebels lost many conference games when they were favored.
