2009 Record: 10-3 MWC Record: 6-2 2010 Returning Starters: 14: 8 Offense, 4 Defense, Kicker, Punter

Coach: Kyle Whittingham (Utah and overall: 48-17, 5 years)

Offensive Coordinators: Dave Schramm, Aaron Roderick Defensive Coordinators: Kalani Sitake

2010 Utah Players to Watch: QB Jordan Wynn, RB Eddie Wide, RB Matt Asiata, WR Jereme Brooks, CB Brandon Burton, DT Sealver Siliga

2010 Utah Strengths:
The offense jumps alevel because of an experienced quarterback. The Utes have impressive backups at Quarterback and running back. and they have four starters back on the O-line. Special teams remain ahighlight.

2010 Utah Weaknesses:
This is something of a rebuilding year on defense after four players were drafted by the NFL. although the talent is there, especially up front. The secondary can rebuild around Burton. The Utes have adifficult non-conference schedule, but they get MWC rivals BYU and TCU at home.

2010 Utah Offense:

It wasn’t an easy decision to put in true freshman Jordan Wynn as the starting quarterback midway through last season, in the process pulling junior college transfer Terrance Cain. But Wynn handled himself well in six games, passing for 1,329 yards and eight touchdowns. His 336-yard performance against Cal earned him MVP honors in the Poinsettia Bowl. Wynn, who had to pack on nearly 40 pounds to his 6-1 frame after he showed up on campus as a mid-year enrollee, ended the spring listed at 195 – about 10 pounds more than his 2009 playing weight. Cain, who is more of a running threat, is also back The depth filters down to running back, where Matt Asiata gained a sixth year of eligibility after losing the better part of two seasons to serious leg injuries. In his place last season, Eddie Wide, a quicker, more sideline-to-sideline back, rushed for 1,069 yards and 12 touchdowns, earning first-team All-Mountain West honors. Asiata gives the Utes flexibility because of his role in the Wildcat, which is now known as the UAsiata” formation around Utah. Top receiver David Reed is gone, but Jereme Brooks (56 catches, 696 yards, seven scores) isn’t much of a drop-off. Coach Kyle Whittingham especially likes Shaky Smithson and sophomores Luke Matthews and DeVonte Christopher for the rotation. The line lost a second-round draft pick in Zane Beadles, but the rest of the starters return, including allleague candidates Zane Taylor and Caleb Schlauderaff.

2010 Utah Defense:

The NFL drafted six Utes in April, four from defense. Expect the scouts to be back soon. There’s plenty of talent remaining. At defensive tackle, sophomore Dave Kruger and junior Sealver SHiga are honors candidates in the league. They have backups of note. Latu Heimuli is coming off a redshirt year for an injury; James Aiono is competing again after being sidelined by academics. Both were among Utah’s top-rated recruits in respective high school and junior college ranks. The linebacking corps could be the one area of concern. The Utes lost three starters and then saw top replacement Nai Fotu blowout a knee in the spring. He will redshirt. There is some starting experience. J.J. Williams, a junior, started as a freshman in 2006 before leaving on a church mission. The secondary is down a few starters, too. It will be anchored by cornerback Brandon Burton.

2010 Utah Special Teams:

Joe Phillips was more than fine in the kicking department last season, taking over for departed All-American Louie Sakoda. Phillips made 20 of 22 field-goal attempts, leading the MWC with a 90.9 percentage. Sean Sellwood came in as a redshirt freshman to punt for a 42.9-yard average. Both leading return men, including Smithson, are back for what may be the most experienced special teams unit in the league.
