2010 Washington Players to Watch: QB Jake Locker, RB Chris Polk, WR Jermaine Kearse, TE Kavarlo Middleton, LT Senio Kelemete, LB Mason Foster, SS Nate Williams
2010 Washington Strengths:
Locker will lead what could be among the best offenses in the country, surrounded by a set of talented skill players just coming into their own, led by Polk and Kearse, the latter being the best of one of the better receiving corps around.
2010 Washington Weaknesses:
The lines on both sides of the ball lack depth, and the defensive front four is the most Questionable part of the team; injury and other Issues kept three potential starters off the field in the spring. Another brutal early schedule – UW opens at BYU (Sept. 4) and plays host to Nebraska (Sept. 18) – could derail hopes.
2010 Washington Offense:
The Huskies averaged 26.1 points per game last season – second-highest since Rick Neuheisel’s last year in 2002 – and should be able to improve on that this year. Dual-threat quarterback Jake Locker, the obvious headline attraction, saw a spike in his passing accuracy last season. With coach Steve Sarkisian implementing an offense that features many more NFL-style drop-back looks, Locker completed 5804 percent of his passes – nearly a 10-percent improvement from his first two seasons. But he’s hardly alone in being a front-line talent. Tailback Chris Polk became the first freshman in school history to rush for 1,000 yards (1,113), and he also caught 25 passes. Junior receiver Jermaine Kearse was a second-team All-Pac-lo pick as a deep threat (17.3 yards per catch). Kearse, junior Devin Aguilar and sophomore James Johnson form one of the best receiving corps in the conference. Junior tight end Kavario Middleton began to transform his immense potential into production late last season, finishing with 26 receptions. The key will be whether a shuffied offensive line – featuring four players who have significant starting experience – can give Locker enough time to get the ball to his receivers and give the running backs room to run.
2010 Washington Defense:
The Huskies were vastly improved last year under fiery coordinator Nick Holt, holding three Pac-10 teams to 13 points or less. Losing middle linebacker Donald Butler and defensive end Daniel Te’o-Nesheim to the NFL is significant, but enough talent returns to think this unit could be even better. Issues linger on the defensive line. Everrette Thompson (Achilles’) and Kalani Aldrich (knee), potential starters at end, missed all of spring ball. Both are expected to return for fall camp. Coaches utilized defensive tackle Cameron Elisara at end throughout spring. That could fit well in the 3-4 scheme, which UW might use more often in 2010 because of depth issues up front.
2010 Washington Special Teams:
Erik Folk turned in one of the best seasons in school history, hitting 18 of 21 field-goal attempts, including a game-winner against Southern California and a last-second kick that forced overtime at Notre Dame. Coaches hope he can improve kickoff distance. Punter Will Mahan is also back after a steady first season (40.6-yard average). Chris Polk could handle kickoff returns again, although guys such as James Johnson, and the early-arriving pair of Jesse Callier and Deontae Cooper, both running backs, could be in the mix.

2010 Washington Predictions:
The Huskies made marked improvement in Sarkisian’s first year, going from 0-12 to 5-7. Jake Locker could be the most valuable player in the country and leads what should be an explosive offense. The defense has issues but should be good enough to allow the offense to outscore just enough opponents to get the Huskies into the postseason for the first time since 2002.
