2009 Record: 5-7 MAC Record: 4-4 2010 Returning Starters: 15: 6 Offense, 7 Defense, Kicker, Punter

Coach: Bill Cubit (Western Michigan: 34-27, 5 years)

Offensive Coordinators: Mike Grant Defensive Coordinators: Dave Cohen

2010 Western Michigan Players to Watch: QB Alex Carder, WR Robert Amhelm, WR Juan Nunez, LT Anthony Parker, DT John Rice, MLB Deauntay Legrler, FS Doug Wiggins

2010 Western Michigan Strengths:
While the Broncos don’t have veteran quarterback Tim Hiller to trigger their offense, Cubit should once again have a team that can go downfield. Carder has arm strength, a quick release and leadership ability. Nunez is a downfield threat, while Amheim is dependable.

2010 Western Michigan Weaknesses:
The defense, which fell apart last year, will be awork in progress. The Broncos brought in defensive coordinator Cohen, the former head coach at Hofstra, to breathe life into the unit. Cohen has a plan to make the defense more aggressive, but it is unproven and on the small side.

2010 Western Michigan Offense:

The offense will have a completely different feel with sophomore quarterback Alex Carder taking over for Tim Hiller. Hiller was a quiet leader who let his play do the talking. That description does not apply to Carder, a fiery leader who seized control of the quarterback position during the spring game, when he was 14 of 18 passing for 147 yards and a touchdown. Carder will need plenty of help from running backs Aaron Winchester and Brian Fields, a redshrit freshman. Winchester backed up Brandon West a year ago, with 46 carries for 148 yards and one touchdown. Winchester isn’t big, but he can deliver a hard punch coming through the line. Junior Robert Arnheim should be Western Michigan’s most dependable receiver after catching 59 passes for 701 yards and three touchdowns a year ago. Senior Juan Nunez, who had 32 catches for 435 yards and six touchdowns in 2009, showed good chemistry with Carder during the spring. Junior Anthony Parker returns to left tackle, and senior right guard Nick Clemens should be dependable. Sophomore right tackle Dann O’Neill, a transfer from Michigan who sat out last season, has the size and strength at 6-7, 316 pounds to dominate.

2010 Western Michigan Defense:

The defense is going through a makeover after ranking 101st in the NCAA in total yards allowed. New coordinator Dave Cohen tried to change the attitude this spring by upping the pace and demanding hard hits from a unit that lacked aggressiveness a year ago. Cohen will depend on juniors John Rice and Doug Wiggins to set an aggressive tone. Rice, a transfer defensive tackle, has a knack for getting into the backfield. Wiggins, a safety, will try to build on last year’s performance of 47 tackles and four forced fumbles. Middle linebacker Deauntay Legrier also will be an important player. The sophomore registered 44 tackles, including seven for a loss, last year.

2010 Western Michigan Special Teams:

The Broncos return two veteran kickers. Junior John Potter was 10 of 15 in field-goal attempts and 36 of 38 on extra point attempts last year. Potter also handles kickoff duties. Junior punter Ben Armer averaged 39.0 yards last year, including six punts of 50 yards or more. He dropped 22 punts inside the 20 and had only three result in touchbacks. Receivers Jordan White and Arnheim will handle returns, along with the speedy back Fields.

2010 Western Michigan Predictions:

This should be a season of transition for Bill Cubit’s Broncos. The offense will learn what life is like without Hiller, who completed 60.1 percent of his passes a year ago and finished fifth in NCAA career passing yards (11,299). Cubit, in his sixth season as the Broncos’ coach, is hoping for a big improvement from the defens.e under Cohen. If he gets it, the Broncos will rise to the middle in the MAC.
