2009 Record: 7-6 MWC Record: 4-4 2010 Returning Starters: 16: 7 Offense, 7 Defense, Kicker, Punter

Coach: Dave Christensen (Wyoming and overall: 7-6, 1 year)

Offensive Coordinators: Marcus Arroyo Defensive Coordinators: Marty English

2010 Wyoming Players to Watch: QB Austyn Carta-Samuels, WR David Leonard, LB Brian Hendricks, CB Marcell Gipson, SS Shamlel Gary, FS Chris Prosinskl, DE Gabe Knapton

2010 Wyoming Strengths:
The offense will keep growing as Christensen adds to the playbook and Carta-Samuels expands his game. The defense is set. especially in the secondary, and all phases of the kicking game return.

2010 Wyoming Weaknesses:
The defense can’t help but miss an outstanding pass rush by John Fletcher and Mitch Unrein. The schedule is front-loaded with Texas and Boise State in September, and the MWC’s Big Three on consecutive weekends in October.

2010 Wyoming Offense:

It helps when a newcomer is able to draw a head start as a mid-year enrollee. Wyoming quarterback Austyn Carta-Samuels didn’t have that advantage last year. It didn’t matter. At 6-2, 215 pounds, Carta-Samuels was ready physically. But the mental demands of the position are great, especially for a young player. Coach Dave Christensen wouldn’t have believed last August that Carta-Samuels could lead the Cowboys to a bowl game with such little preparation. But Carta-Samuels, the MWC Freshman of the Year, led Wyoming to five fourth-quarter comebacks and almost single-handedly solved the turnover crisis that contributed to the demise of Christensen’s predecessor, Joe Glenn. By the spring, he was only the second sophomore in school history to be named a co-captain. In 2008, Wyoming ranked next-to-Iast nationally in turnover margin at minus-1.83 a game. A year later, Wyoming was 17th nationally. Although Carta-Samuels won’t take anyone by surprise this season, Christensen expects even more from him. uWe’re able to put him with a better surrounding cast than he worked with most of the season last year,” Christensen said. Christensen plans to add considerably to the spread offense playbook as Carta-Samuels grows with the program and a running game matures around sophomore Alvester Alexander.

2010 Wyoming Defense:

An overhaul in defensive philosophy is on tap with a move to a 4-3 base defense. It means switching linebackers Gabe Knapton and Josh Biezuns to defensive end, but there’s plenty remaining at linebacker. Wyoming had a talented supply at linebacker in 2009, anchored in the middle by Brian Hendricks. He had a staggering 23 tackles against Air Force. The biggest positive for the Cowboys is that a stellar secondary returns intact. Brothers Marcell and Tashaun Gipson start for the third year at the corners. Senior free safety Chris Prosinski, 10th in the country last year with 10.8 tackles a game, has a shot at MWC Defensive Player of the Year honors. Not to be overlooked is strong safety Shamiel Gary, who earned Freshman All-America honors.

2010 Wyoming Special Teams:

Freshmen walk-ons usually don’t contribute as much more than placekicker Ian Watts, who trekked from Philadelphia to Laramie. He contributed three game-winning fIeld goals. Punting was solid with Austin McCoy’s 43.3-yard average. Punting for distance isn’t as easy as it sounds at 7,200-foot elevation, given Laramie’s always unpredictable swirling winds. Wyoming’s return game remains in proven hands with Marcell Gipson returning kicks and David Leonard on punt return duty.

2010 Wyoming Predictions:

The Cowboys might have overachieved in Christensen’s initial campaign, but Wyoming is clearly a program on the rise. Whether the Cowboys can knock off any of the Big Three remains a question, much like it is for the rest of the MWC.
