AFC Week 4 Predictions

Top 3 AFC Matchups – Week 4

The 2010 NFL season is only three week’s old and we are down to just two teams in the AFC that remain unbeaten. Pittsburgh, without the services of its starting quarterback Ben Roethlisberger, has ridden a solid running game and relentless defense to a 3-0 start. Kansas City, the other 3-0 team, has used whatever means at its disposal to generate its surprising start. The best of the rest include Indianapolis, which has overcome an ugly home opener to once again start firing on all cylinders and the New York Jets, who have suddenly found an offense to go along with a dominant defense.

Here is a look at my top three matchups in the AFC for Week 4 of the NFL season. All odds are provided by Sportsbook.com.

vs.

Baltimore Ravens @ Pittsburgh Steelers (-1 ½)                         Over/Under: 34 ½

Baltimore managed to scored 24 points against Cleveland last week but are still ranked 28th in total points per game. The fact that the Ravens leading rusher, Ray Rice remains highly questionable for this game with a knee bruise will not help their cause against a Pittsburgh defense that is ranked third against the run.

Pittsburgh will stick with Charlie Batch as its starting quarterback even though Byron Leftwich is fully recovered from a left knee injury. A win is this game would match the Steelers best start since 1979 at 4-0.

The Ravens are 2-6-2 against the spread in their last nine games against the AFC. The Steelers are 4-0-1 ATS in their last five games overall. Baltimore has lost nine out of its last 10 games at Heinz Field straight-up and is 0-1-3 ATS in its last four games against Pittsburgh. The Steelers add to the Ravens recent misery in this series with another win this Sunday.

vs.

Indianapolis Colts (-9) @ Jacksonville Jaguars                      Over/Under: 46 ½

Indianapolis QB Peyton Manning is off to another blistering start, completing 87-of-126 attempts for 1,013 yards and nine TD’s with no interceptions. The Colts are ranked second in average points per game with 29.7.

Jacksonville only managed to score three points last week at home against Philadelphia. Prior to that, the Jaguars had been averaging close to 24 points a game over their last nine home games.

The Colts are 7-1 ATS in their last eight games as a road favorite. The Jaguars are 4-14 ATS in their last 18 home games. Indianapolis rolls against Jacksonville’s 29th ranked defense.

vs.

New England Patriots (-1) @ Miami Dolphins                              Over/Under: 45 ½

New England’s offense is averaging 30 points a game, which is ranked first in the NFL, but its defense is giving up an average of 27.3 points per game, which is ranked 28th. The problems exist across the entire unit as the Patriots are ranked 20th against the run and 25thagainst the pass.

Miami’s defense has been its biggest asset this season, giving up an average of just 310.7 totals yards per game and an average of just 17 points. The Dolphins offense is becoming a liability as they are averaging just 319.3 yards per game and 17.3 points.

The Patriots are 2-6 ATS in their last eight games against the AFC East. The Dolphins are 8-2 ATS in their last 10 games against the AFC East. Head-to-head, New England is 1-4 ATS against Miami in its last four games. The Dolphins continue to have the Patriots number in 2010 with a big win at home.
