Arizona Cardinals 2011 Preview

It has been an amazing roller coaster ride for Arizona over the past five seasons after finishing 5-11 in 2006, winning the division in 2008 with a 9-7 record and going all the way to the Super Bowl, and crashing back down to earth in 2010 with just five wins and a last place finish in the West. The crash was not totally unexpected after future Hall of Fame quarterback Kurt Warner decided to retire and All-Pro wide receiver Anquan Boldin ended up in Baltimore. The Cardinals’ once powerful offensive attack finished the 2010 season ranked 31st in the NFL in total yards and 27th in points scored.

The recent player lockout has put Head Coach Ken Whisenhunt’s rebuilding plans on hold, but many expect Arizona to make a move to bring in a veteran QB to take the reins from a collection of players that could not get the job done. Many experts speculate that the Cardinals will go after Kevin Kolb from Philadelphia through a trade once the league reopens for business. Regardless of who they bring in to fill the role, there are some other serious issues such as a running game that was ranked last in the league, which will also have to be addressed to try and turn things around. They did draft RB’s Ryan Williams in the second round and Anthony Sherman in the fifth, but there are still some holes on the offensive line that need to be filled.

Defense is another major issue for this team. When Warner was scoring points by the bucket load, it helped cover up the problems on this side of the ball, but last season they were fully exposed. Arizona finished the year ranked 29th in total yards allowed and 30th in points allowed. To try and make an immediate impact, the Cardinals selected CB Patrick Peterson with the fifth overall pick in the draft. This guy is a playmaker and should be able to make this entire squad better right from the start. They added some additional depth in the later rounds, but will have to rely on the upcoming free agency frenzy to plug a few more holes on this side of the ball.

Kurt Warner may have not been the greatest QB to ever play the game, but he did an amazing job in covering up some major holes in this team. A new quarterback and a few new players here and there will certainly help, but unfortunately the Cardinals will remain at the bottom of the tracks in 2011 waiting for another ride to begin.
