Carolina Panthers 2010 Odds, Preview, and Predictions

Carolina Panthers Current odds to win: Division: +500 Conference: 16-1 Super Bowl: 35-1

Carolina was third in the NFC South last year with an 8-8 record. They were 5-3 at home and 3-5 on the road. They went 4-2 in the division and 8-4 in the conference.

They failed to qualify for the postseason.

Carolina Panthers Outlook for 2010

Carolina will be a team in transition in 2010 as several veteran players are gone and some new faces have been brought in to take their place. Gone are longtime starters QB Jake Delhomme, WR Muhsin Muhammad, DE Julius Peppers , and S Chris Harris. Head coach John Fox enters the final year of his contract with 67 players on his roster that are 25 or younger.

Heading into training camp it appears that Matt Moore will be the Panthers starting QB on opening day. They did draft Notre Dame QB Jimmy Clausen in the second round and Cincinnati QB Tony Pike in the sixth round so expect an immediate quarterback controversy should Moore get off to a bad start. Veteran WR Steve Smith will be the primary target no matter who is behind center and RB’s Jonathan Stewart and DeAngelo Williams, who combined for over 2,220 yards rushing last season, will carry the load out of the backfield.

Defensively the Panthers need to find a way to fill the void left by not only the departure of Peppers but DT’s Damione Lewis and Maake Kemoeatu, who were both released. They also just lost LB Thomas Davis with another torn ACL which will not help their cause. Quite a few new players are going to have to step up for Carolina to have any chance to maintain their eighth overall ranking from last season.

There are just too many holes to fill on this team for them to be competitive in 2010. Transitional years like this tend to take their toll as the losses will continue to pile up as season wears on. They will most likely battle Tampa to stay out of the cellar in the NFC South.

2010 Carolina Panthers Prediction: 6-10, third place in the NFC South.
