Carolina Panthers 2010 NFL Record: 2-14 Home: 2-6 Away: 0-8
Carolina finished fourth in the NFC South last year with a 2-14 record. The Panthers were 2-6 at home and 0-8 on the road. They went 0-6 in the division and 2-10 in the conference.
Carolina Panthers 2011 Preview
Carolina tied for the best-record in the NFC at 12-4 in 2008, but a devastating 33-13 loss to Arizona as a heavy home-favorite in the playoffs led to a downward spiral that saw the win total drop to eight in 2009 and all the way to two in 2010. It cost starting quarterback Jake Delhomme his spot on the team and head coach John Fox his job. The Panthers took a shot on Notre Dame signal-caller Jimmy Clausen in the second round of the 2010 draft, but are hoping they found the future of the franchise in Heisman Trophy winner Cam Newton with the first overall pick in this year’s draft.
Newton alone will hardly be enough on a team that quickly sunk to having the worst offense in the NFL. It averaged just 258.4 total yards and 12.2 points a game in 2010, which were both dead-last in the league. The running game was the only bright spot with an average of 115.4 yards a game, but Carolina could lose RB DeAngelo Williams to free agency and four-year vet Jonathan Stewart is coming off his least productive season with the team. It will be vital to surround Newton with a solid ground game, to keep him from running for his life all season long.
The Panthers’ defense was also a sore spot last year; ranking 18th in total yards allowed and 26th in points allowed. This offseason, new Head Coach Ron Rivera, who was San Diego’s defensive coordinator for four seasons, added Terrell McClain and Sione Fua to the defensive line in the third round of the draft, but team owner Jerry Richardson has already commented that he expects the Panthers to be ‘aggressive in free agency’ on both sides of the ball.
Plain and simple, this is a rebuilding year for Carolina as it has just too many holes across just about every area of the roster to effectively compete against the better teams in the NFC South. The Panthers could be poised to pull off a few upsets along the way, but maintain a firm lock on the bottom of the division for the foreseeable future.
