Detroit LionsDetroit finished fourth in NFC North last year with a 2-14 record. They were 2-6 at home and 0-8 on the road. They went 0-6 in the division and 1-11 in the conference.

They did not qualify for postseason play.

Detroit Lions Outlook for 2010

Going from 0-16 in 2008 to 2-14 in 2009 could be considered a minor step in the right direction, but after adding QB Matthew Stafford with the first overall pick last year and DT Ndamukong Suh with the second overall pick this year, the pressure will begin to mount for second year head coach Jim Schwartz to take a much bigger step forward in 2010.

In his rookie year, Stafford played about as well as you could have hoped for given the talent level that surrounded him. With that first year under his belt he should show some dramatic improvement in 2010, but the Lions have done little to upgrade the other skill positions on the offense. Kevin Smith has shown some promise as the team’s leading rusher and WR Calvin Johnson could still develop into a No.1 receiver, but beyond that there just is not that much talent and depth. RB Jahvid Best, who was drafted with Detroit’s second pick in the first round, 30th overall may be able to add a spark to a rushing offense that was ranked 24th overall last year.

Adding Suh should immediately help a defense that was ranked dead last in total points and yards allowed, but he alone will not be a miracle worker. They also signed S C.C. Brown who started seven games for the Giants last year and resigned a couple of starters from last year, but with the exception of Suh this is basically the same cast of characters that played so poorly last season.

Playing in the same division with Super Bowl contenders Green Bay and Minnesota will make it very hard for Detroit to make any serious headway in 2010. While they continue to acquire top notch talent through high picks in the draft, the Lions are still a few seasons away from having it all come together in the form of a winning season.

2010 Detroit Lions Prediction: 5-11, fourth place in the NFC North.
