Philadelphia Eagles

The season is finally here so we can all check out the “dream team” Philadelphia has assembled.  No team made a bigger splash in the offseason but after a lot of initial excitement many are retreating from putting the Eagles directly in the Super Bowl.  This is a good team that got better but it is far from perfect.  They need to get out to a good start in the opener to prevent scrutiny.

Last year we finally saw what Michael Vick can achieve when he is surrounded by talent that compliments his instead of being forced to do everything on his own.  The Eagles were second in yards per game and third in points per game on offense last season.  LeSean McCoy rushed for more than 1000 yards for the first time and DeSean Jackson broke 1000 yards too on just 47 receptions.  Whenever they really needed a big play they were able to muster one…it was very exciting.

Their greatest acquisition was on defense in the form of cover corner Nnamdi Asomugha.  With him on the field you can take more chances and take away a team’s star receiver.  The Eagles are very weak at the linebacker position and they are hoping an aggressive line can prevent that from being over exposed in the middle of the field.  Philadelphia may have to rely on their offense to win games more than they would like…including this week.

St. Louis Rams

The St. Louis Rams were much better in 2010 than anyone expected.  With a rookie quarterback at the helm expectations were admittedly low yet the team managed a first place tie with Seattle – even if it was with just a 7-9 record.  They didn’t do too much to improve in the offseason but there is plenty of room for their players to grow.

The one “major” addition the Rams did make was picking up Mike Sims-Walker, a speedy receiver who immediately becomes the top threat for Sam Bradford – who showed a lot of promise as a rookie.  The key was that he was able to complete a high percentage of passes.  Now he might be able to stretch the field more, opening up running room for the reliable Steven Jackson.  They are good enough on offense to win most of the time.

One of the reasons they surprised last year was the play of the defense.  The defensive line was one of the most productive in the league as Chris Long finally emerged with 8.5 sacks.  The secondary also was solid.  The Rams need some players to step up and create some plays because expecting lineman James Hall to chip in another 10.5 sacks is probably asking too much…especially chasing a QB like Vick.
