It was not all that pretty, but Jacksonville was able to grind out a 16-14 victory over Tennessee as a 1.5-point home favorite this past Sunday. The total stayed ‘under’ the 37-point line. Despite dominating the Titans on paper, the Jaguars needed a Dwight Lowery interception with less than 30 second to play, to finally seal the win.

Luke McCown was promoted to the starting role as quarterback after head coach Jack Del Rio decided to release his previous starter David Garrard less than a week before the season started. This controversial call worked in Week 1 as McCown managed the game well with 175 yards passing and a 70.1 percent completion rate, but this week’s game will be the real test against a much better defense.

New York is lucky to be coming into this game with a win over Dallas in its opener, after trailing by 14 points in the fourth quarter. Capitalizing on a couple of Texas-sized mistakes down the stretch, the Jets eked out a 27-24 victory as a 4.5-point home favorite. The total went well ‘over’ the 40.5-point line.

Mark Sanchez threw for 335 yards and two touchdowns, but completed less than 60 percent of his passes and turned the ball over twice. The Jets vaunted rushing attack was held to just 45 yards and their normally stout defense was burned for close to 400 yards of total offense. This was hardly the performance that head coach Rex Ryan envisioned for a team he has already declared will win this year’s Super Bowl.

Jacksonville is 5-14 straight-up in its last 19 games on the road and the total has gone ‘over’ in seven of its last nine road games. New York is 4-1 SU in its last five games at home, but just 2-4 against the spread in its last six there. The total has gone ‘over’ in six of its last seven games overall.

Head-to-head, the Jaguars are 5-0 ATS in the last five meetings overall and 4-1 ATS in the last five contests in New Jersey. The last time they played one another was in 2009 with Jacksonville coming away with a 24-22 win as a seven-point road underdog. This time around, things swing back in the Jets favor as they win and cover with a much better all-around team performance.

The odds makers have the New York Jets as a -9.5 point favorite with an over/under of 38.5.
