Kansas City was fourth in the AFC West last year with a 4-12 record. They were 1-7 at home and 3-5 on the road. They went 2-4 in the division and 3-9 in the conference.
They failed to qualify for the postseason.
Kansas City Chiefs Outlook for 2010
Kansas City is ever so slowly trying to rebuild a franchise that has been down on their luck for last few years. Since making the playoffs as a wildcard team in 2006 with a 9-7 record they have won a total of 10 games in the past three years. When your offense is ranked 25th and your defense is ranked 30th it is hard to know where to start trying to plug the holes.
The Chiefs have a legitimate rusher in Jamaal Charles, who ran for over 1,100 yards last season, but they still selected RB Dexter McCluster from Mississippi with the 36th overall pick in the draft. Perhaps in the absence of a solid passing game they are modeling themselves after some other run oriented teams in the AFC. Matt Cassel will be back as the Chiefs starting quarterback, but he has yet to live up to hype he generated as a free agent after his one successful season with New England.
Defensively Kansas City went after a true playmaker when they took SS Eric Berry with the fifth overall pick in the draft. He should be able to come in right away to be a disruptive force in the secondary. They also drafted CB Javier Arenas from Alabama in the second round to help improve a pass defense that was ranked 22nd in the league.
Much like the Oakland Raiders, this franchise is taking some positive steps in the right direction but they are still a couple a years away from being a serious competitive threat. If some of their young talent quickly develops they will pull off a few upsets next year, but not enough to generate a winning record.
