They failed to qualify for the postseason.

New York Giants Outlook for 2010

After a strong 5-0 start to the 2009 season things unraveled quickly for New York. They went on to lose eight of their next 11 games and miss the playoffs after winning the Super Bowl just two seasons earlier. The most disturbing aspect of this free fall was the collapse of their vaunted defense. Once the backbone of this team, they started giving up points in bunches while getting blown off the field. The biggest test ahead for head coach Tom Coughlin is to rebuild the confidence that made them winners in the first place.

The big challenge on offense will be getting QB Eli Manning back to playing like he did when they won the 2008 Super Bowl. Since losing his No. 1 target, WR Plaxico Burress he has not looked the same and his numbers continued to drop off in 2009 as the losses piled up. With a solid No. 1 in Steve Smith, if receivers like Mario Manningham and Hakeem Nicks continue to develop, this offense has the potential to turn things around quickly and be one of the best in the league.

Coughlin used the draft to address some of defensive concerns by spending five of their seven picks on this side of the ball. To immediately upgrade their pass rush he added South Florida DE Jason Pierre-Paul with the 15th overall pick. He went on to add DT Linval Joseph in the second round and FS Chad Jones in the third. All three of these players have an opportunity to make an immediate impact on this unit.

Much of the success of the Giants will be determined by how quickly they can come back together as team to regain the form that made them so good in the past. The one problem may be that Coughlin’s hard nose act is starting to wear thin with the players. If they stumble off to a bad start it could send them on a path of no return.

2010 New York Giants Prediction: 6-10, fourth place in the NFC East.
