NFC Week 5 Predictions

Top 3 NFC Matchups Week 5

The final undefeated team in the conference fell last week when the New York Giants pummeled the Chicago Bears into submission 17-3 on Sunday night. The Giants sacked Bears QB Jay Cutler nine times in their first 20 plays, finally sending him to the bench with a concussion. The Washington Redskins knocked Eagles QB Michal Vick out of the game with bruised ribs in Donovan McNabb’s triumphant return to Philadelphia on its way to a 17-12 victory. San Francisco’s miseries continued as it lost its fourth straight game after Atlanta kicked a last second game-winning field goal to beat the 49ers 16-14.

Here is a look at my top three matchups in the NFC for Week 5 of the NFL season.

vs.

Green Bay Packers (-2.5) @ Washington Redskins                  Over/Under: 44

Green Bay continues to find ways to win games but it does not look like the dominant team that everyone expected before the season began. The loss of RB Ryan Grant has hurt the Packers’ running game more than expected as they are only averaging 95.4 yards per game on the ground.

Washington’s ground game took a hit when its leading rusher Clinton Portis left the Eagles game with a strained groin. Right now he is listed as doubtful for this game. Another concern for the Redskins is their pass defense which is ranked 31st in the league, giving up over 300 yards per game.

The Packers are 9-3-1 against the spread in their last 13 games and 5-2 ATS in their last seven road games. The Redskins are 2-5-1 ATS in their last eight games following a SU win. Head-to-head, the favorite is 3-0-1 in the last four games. The Pack gets back on track in a big way on Sunday.

vs.

New Orleans Saints (-7) @ Arizona Cardinals                           Over/Under: 45.5

New Orleans problems have been two-fold this season. The Saints’ offense is ranked 30th in average rushing yards per game as injuries to Reggie Bush and Pierre Thomas have taken their toll. Their defense is ranked 26th against the run and mounting injuries on that side of the ball as well have not helped their cause.

Arizona is 2-2 but it has been a case of smoke and mirrors so far. The Cardinals offense is ranked 31st in total yards per game and 29th in points scored. Their defense is ranked 29th in total yards allowed and 31st in total points allowed. This is not a good formula for continued success.

The Saints are 3-9 ATS in their last 12 games but 7-2-1 ATS in their last 10 games on grass. The Cardinals are 10-3 ATS in their last 10 games as an underdog, but 1-4 ATS in their last five games overall. New Orleans turns to its passing game against a very porous Arizona secondary to secure the win.

vs.

Philadelphia Eagles @ San Francisco 49ers (-3)                        Over/Under: 38

Philadelphia will go Kevin Kolb as its starting quarterback after all with Michael Vick out with the rib injury. RB LeSean McCoy also injured his ribs but remains optimistic he can play in this game.

San Francisco is 0-4 but can get right back in the thick of the NFC West division race with a couple of wins as the rest of the teams are all 2-2. In order to do so the 49ers have to find a way to improve an offense that is averaging just 13 points per game.

The Eagles are 1-6 ATS in their last seven games and 0-4 ATS in their last four games as an underdog. The 49ers are 4-0-1 ATS in their last five home games and 5-2-2 in their last nine games as a home favorite. San Francisco gets its first win against the Vick-less Eagles.

I’m a Bears fan, and yuck, that was rough for us to watch. Cutler isn’t very good, but man, our other quarterbacks are sucking it up as well. :( This season might end up like last season.
