Oakland was third in the AFC West last year with a 5-11 record. They were 2-6 at home and 3-5 on the road. They went 2-4 in the division and 4-8 in the conference.
They failed to qualify for the postseason.
Oakland Raiders Outlook for 2010
This offseason has been one of the most productive for Oakland in a number of years. They finally managed the draft in a way that matched picks directly with needs, traded for a legitimate NFL quarterback in Jason Campbell, and pulled the plug on the JaMarcus Russell experiment that went so horribly wrong. They may have finally turned the corner on returning to the glory days of this storied franchise.
Campbell should be able to step in right away and add a spark to an offense that ended last season ranked 29th in passing yards and 31st in total yards and points scored. They are still lacking a feature running back and an elite #1 receiver, but there is a solid nucleus of talent including players like RB Michael Bush and TE Zach Miller.
Defensively the Raiders ended last season ranked 26th overall but they were seventh against the pass. They added LB Rolando McClain in the first round and DT Lamarr Houston in the second to help plug some holes. All in all they used sixth of their nine draft picks on the defensive side of the ball. If some of these young players can make a contribution right from the start and they keep DE Richard Seymour happy by signing him to a long term deal, Oakland’s defense could be vastly improved next season.
While they have added some much needed pieces to the puzzle, the Raiders are still a year or two away from seriously competing for the division. At least for now they appear to be headed in the right direction.
