Philadelphia Eagles 2011 Preview

The Philadelphia Eagles have been at or near the top of the NFC East standings for a good part of Andy Reid’s 12-year tenure as the team’s head coach. He has led the Eagles to five NFC Championship Games and one Super Bowl, but the elusive Vince Lombardi Trophy is the one piece of hardware missing from what would otherwise be a lock for a Hall of Fame career. This could be the season that all changes after team owner Jeffery Lurie decided to give his player personnel staff carte blanche with the checkbook once the free agent market finally opened for business at the end of July.

To compliment the likes of QB Michael Vick, RB LeSean McCoy, WR’s DeSean Jackson and Jeremy Maclin, and TE Brent Celek, the Eagles added OL Danny Watkins in the first round of the draft, OL Ryan Harris, who was an unrestricted free agent formally with Denver, and RB Ronnie Brown, who was in Miami’s backfield the past six seasons. Philadelphia also signed ex-Titan QB Vince Young as an insurance policy against the continue health of Vick, who has only played all 16 games once in his eight seasons in the NFL. You have to wonder how much better can an offense that averaged 27.4 points a game and was ranked second overall in the NFL last season get?

Philadelphia actually made the most noise on the defensive side of the ball with the signing of this year’s top free agent CB Nnamdi Asomugha, who was previously with Oakland. This was after trading backup quarterback Kevin Kolb to Arizona for another defensive back, Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie. These two Pro Bowlers now join another All-Pro corner, Asante Samuel in a suddenly crowded secondary. The Eagles also addressed some issues on the defensive line by adding Jason Babin and Cullen Jenkins.

Many of these moves can be viewed as an effort to bring in the necessary help to make a run at the Super Bowl now as opposed to waiting until some of the younger talent on this team develops. It has certainly caught the eye of the betting public, who has driven the Eagles’ current odds down to the third-favorite to win it all this year after Green Bay and New England.
