Washington Redskins

The Washington Redskins had a tough loss on Monday night in Dallas.  Now they have a short week and another road trip to face a team that is absolutely desperate for a win.  It sounds like a situation that the Skins might not be up for mentally.  This will be a real test of whether their 2-1 record is an indicator of contender status or just a but of early luck.

The Monday nighter wasn’t pretty but the Skins were in it all the way to the end against the Cowboys.  In that one they couldn’t run worth a lick, averaging under 3 yards per carry, forcing QB Rex Grossman to do more than just manage the game.  His numbers were just OK as he really doesn’t have a great assortment of weapons and was under pressure all night from DeMarcus Ware and Co.

The good news from Monday was that the defense didn’t give up a touchdown to Dallas.  They let Felix Jones run for 115 yards and Tony Romo was solid but they wouldn’t let Dallas punch it into the end zone.  Any defense that can do that is pretty impressive but they need to start making some more negative plays, only rookie Ryan Kerrigan was able to get to Romo for a sack.  Against St. Louis they need to be able to rattle Sam Bradford who thrives on rhythm.

St. Louis Rams

Last season the St. Louis Rams showed a lot of promise as Sam Bradford had a wonderful first year in the league.  They were expected to contend in the very weak NFC West this season but at 0-3 that notion may have already passed.  Injuries have certainly played a role but the latest injury report show that Steven Jackson is probable for Sunday.  They desperately need him out there.

It is no shocker given their record that the Rams have struggled to score points – just 12ppg.  Last week they were mauled by Baltimore, notching their only points after already being down 30-0.  In fact they have only led for about 15 minutes in all three of their games combined.  This may be a throwing based offense but it is not a big play one.  They don’t have the weapons or defense really to come back from behind.

Last year the Rams hosted Washington in September and won 30-16 at home as 4.5 point dogs.  In that game the Rams repeatedly rammed the ball down the throat of the Skins, controlling the clock for more than 34 minutes.  St. Louis has won three of the last 4 against Washington and is 4-0 ATS against them since 2006.  They are desperate for a win this week and have a ripe opponent to get one.

The odds makers have the Washington Redskins as a -1 point favorite with an over/under of 43.5.
