San Diego Chargers 2010 NFL Record: 9-7 Home: 6-2 Away: 3-5

San Diego finished second in the AFC West last year with a 9-7 record. The Chargers were 6-2 at home and 3-5 on the road. They went 3-3 in the division and 7-5 in the conference.

They failed to qualify for the postseason.

San Diego Chargers 2011 Preview

If there ever was a case of numbers not telling the whole story, the 2010 San Diego Chargers would be the perfect example. They finished the season with the No.1 ranked offense and defense in the league in terms of yards per game and were ranked second in points scored and 10th in points allowed, yet they watched the playoffs at home on TV just like the rest of us. San Diego was actually doomed with another slow start that dropped it into a 2-5 hole that it could never climb out of. This is nothing new for the Chargers, who are notoriously slow out of the gate, but by the time December rolled around there was nothing left in the tank to pull off another miraculous finish.

This season, the Chargers are once again a heavy favorite to win the AFC West and the third-favorite to win the AFC, but you have to question whether or not their window of opportunity has already closed. Phillip Rivers is still one of the best quarterbacks in the league and WR Vincent Jackson is back in the lineup on a full-time basis after missing a substantial amount of time last season in a prolonged holdout. They also re- signed WR Malcolm Floyd to a two-year deal, but TE Antonio Gates remains on the inactive list while recovering from a foot injury. The running game took a hit when Darren Sproules decided to sign with New Orleans, so it will be up to Ryan Mathews, Mike Tolbert, and rookie Jordan Todman to fill the void, especially in third-down situations.

The defense should once again be solid, but there are some early injury concerns that are starting to pile up. LB Larry English is still recovering from foot surgery and CB Antoine Cason will miss some time with a broken finger. LB Shawn Merriman is off to Buffalo but the Chargers did re-sign LB Stephen Cooper. Two new additions to the defense that add some veteran leadership are LB Takeo Spikes and S Bob Sanders.

If San Diego can correct its special teams play, which literally cost it a shot at making the playoffs last season, it should right back on top in the AFC West this year. However, with the resurgent Chiefs standing in their way, it is not a given the Chargers win the division going away, as was the case in the past.
