San Francisco 49ers OddsSan Francisco finished second in the NFC West last year with an 8-8 record. They were 6-2 at home and 2-6 on the road. They went 5-1 in the division and 7-5 in the conference.

They failed to qualify for the postseason.

San Francisco 49ers Outlook for 2010

San Francisco rallied to win three out of their final four games last year to finish the year at .500. As Mike Singletary enters his second full year as head coach, the general feeling is that this team is poised to take the next step in 2010. While the 49ers do not have a wealth of talent, they have bought into Singletary’s philosophy of playing hard every game as a team. He has already shown the ability to squeeze more out of less going 13-12 in his first 25 games.

The offense will once again be built around the ground game led by RB Frank Gore. Gore’s 4.9 yards per carry was tied for second in the NFC last season and his 1,129 was fourth best. As long as San Francisco has QB Alex Smith managing the game and not trying to make plays to win it, they will be fine. He is a capable starter in this league, but will be never known for his big play ability. TE Vernon Davis was the team’s leading receiver in 2009 and should be the primary focus of the passing game again in 2010. By no means will this be the flashiest offense in the league, but they are competent enough to get the job done.

Using a bend but do not break approach on defense, the 49er’s were ranked 14th in total yards allowed but only fourth in points allowed, keeping them in almost every game they played. Singletary with the help of defensive coordinator Greg Manusky have built a unit that is solid throughout. Much like the offense, there is not a lot of flash just a ton of substance.

With the imminent demise of Arizona the door is wide open for San Francisco to take back the NFC West this season. They are the most balanced team in the division and should be able to lineup up every week with a chance to win. They are not going to roll over anybody, but they will not be rolled over themselves adding up to a very workmanlike season that results in a division title.

2010 San Francisco 49ers Prediction: 9-7, first place in the NFC West.
