Philadelphia leads series 2-1

New Jersey Devils: -110

The New Jersey Devils got a Superman-like performance from Martin Brodeur on Sunday but still could not manage enough offense to give mighty Marty a win. In fact, they were only able to generate 19 shots on goal – in an overtime game, that is not good at all. Jersey is now 5-16 in their last 21 road games with seemingly no way to stop the road bleeding.

The Devils’ offense was led by winger Brian Rolston, who had been quiet in the series but woke up with a two goal performance. Ilya Kovalchuk continued his better play with two assists while Travis Zajac and Patrik Elias each recorded an assist. Both of New Jersey’s goals came on the power play – they were otherwise outplayed five on five.

It is time for the offense to step up and generate more shots against Brian Boucher. With every period, Boucher is gaining a little more confidence both within himself and within his team. Jersey seems intimidated or maybe they just don’t match up well with their Conference foe. They will need at least one win in Philadelphia if they want to advance – a tough task for a weak road team.

Philadelphia Flyers: -110

The Philadelphia Flyers scraped their way into the playoffs but their play in the first round would suggest otherwise. They have taken home ice advantage from the New Jersey Devils and now own a 2-1 series lead against the team that finished the regular season with 103 points and in second place in the Eastern Conference.

The Flyers got one goal (overtime winner) and one assist from tough guy Daniel Carcillo – proof that when things are going well for a team, anything can happen! Mike Richards recorded a goal and an assist, Claude Giroux scored in his second consecutive game, while Chris Pronger, Simone Gagne and Kimmo Timonen added assists in Game 3. Jeff Carter was held pointless for the third consecutive game – Shocking!

The Philadelphia Flyers have a little mojo going into Game 4. Not only are they playing some good hockey, they appear to be having a good time in the process. The Flyers are getting it done without their best offensive player, Jeff Carter contributing and if he wakes up, the Flyers will be extremely tough to beat. The pre-season hype is finally being realized but the huge question mark remains – can the goaltending hold up? With the anaemic New Jersey attack, goaltending does not appear to be as huge an issue as it should be.

Pick: Philadelphia Flyers -110
