NHL Game Preview for Friday March 16, 2012 – Washington Capitals @ Winnipeg Jets

Online Sportsbook Overview

The playoff races are now extremely tight in the NHLas the season comes down to its last two weeks. This is an exciting time of the year for sports fans because the NHLseason winds down, the March Madness odds are released and the NBA trade deadline rumors are flying. The two teams involved in this game are battling each other for the eighth and final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference. The Jets had held on to that spot for a while, but the team has faded as of late and is falling further behind. The Capitals have been trailing the Florida Panthers for first place in the Southeast Division for over a week and cannot seem to gain any ground.

The Jets had been holding off the Capitals and at least three other teams for that eighth and final playoff spot for at least a month. The Jets were also climbing the divisional standings and threatening the Florida Panthers for first place in the Southeast Division. ButWinnipegfell off a bit and the Capitals picked up the pace. While the Southeast Division could be called one of the weakest divisions in theNHL, it is certainly making for a very exciting playoff run. These last 10 or 11 games will be fun to watch for all of the fans of the teams in the Southeast Division.

Washington Capitals

The Capitals have been getting good goaltending from Michal Neuvirth in the last couple games, but the team is still utilizing Neuvirth and Vokoun in goal. The Capitals come into this game with a four-game winning streak. Two wins belong to Vokoun and two wins belong to Neuvirth. The price per head bookie experts do not look at it as quite the same situation that the St. Louis Blues have where the Blues have two very good goaltenders that have over 20 wins each this season. But it is the kind of momentum that the Capitals have needed for this late-season run. The only thing that the Capitals have to watch for is that its 13-18-3 road record could makeWashington an easy target for aWinnipeg team that is very good at home.

Winnipeg Jets

About a month ago, the Jets had it all. Winnipeg’s big but fast defense was scoring goals, the offense was coming to life and the goaltending was being praised as some of the best young goaltending in the league. But as the season winds down, these Winnipeg Jets are starting to look more like the Atlanta Thrashers. Just as the Thrashers did last season, these Jets are caving in the home stretch. A betonline.com review of the Jets’ record in the last 10 games shows that it stands at5-3-2. That is not bad, but the losses are coming at extremely inopportune times.

The Bottom Line

The Jets trail the Capitals by four points in the standings andWinnipegis only five points out of the division lead. As the battle for the Southeast Division title heats up, the Winnipeg Jets need to start putting together wins if it wants to be part of the playoff equation.
