The Pacific Division could be very interesting this season with one team on the rise, one team on the decline, and another team trying to repeat last season’s surprise performance. All that, and I haven’t even mentioned the San Jose Sharks, one of the best teams in the league. All that, and we haven’t even mentioned the San Jose Sharks, one of the best teams in the league.

2010 Anaheim Ducks Season Preview

Anaheim Ducks Season PreviewThe Anaheim offence, led by the trio of Ryan Getzlaf, Corey Perry and Bobby Ryan should be good. Add in Teemu Selanne, Joffrey Lupol and Dan Sexton and the offence should be pretty damn good. With Jonas Hiller in net, the goaltending situation is well taken care off. It’s just that defense that has me worried. It’s impossible to replace the leadership and abilities that Scott Niedermayer brought to the ice, and Anaheim is burdened with that task. Unfortunately, they just don’t have nearly enough depth or talent to compete with the big boys. Maybe in a couple of years when the young d-boys develop into d-men…just not this year.

2010 Dallas Stars Devils Season Preview

Dallas Stars Season PreviewIt’s going to be weird to see the Stars open their season without Mike Modano dressing for them. The greatest Star ever left for Detroit for one last hurrah. They’re also sans-Marty Turco, who left for Chicago. But guys like Brandon Morrow, Stephane Robidas and Brad Richards will provide offense and leadership. Mike Ribeiro will provide offense, but may lack in the leadership. The defense can still improve, and the goalie situation is iffy. The results of a successful team won’t be there for Dallas in 2010 because of their questions on the backend.

2010 Los Angeles Kings Season Preview

Los Angeles Kings Season PreviewThe LA Kings ar teh next big team in the NHL. They finally made the playoffs last season and had a pretty good postseason appearance versus Vancouver. They were big players in the Kovalchuk sweepstakes, but unfortunately came up short (instead they signed Alexei Ponikarovsky…yay!). Even without the sniping Russian, there is enough talent on L.A. to compete with anyone. When motivated, Anze Kopitar is one of the best in the league. Jonathon Quick is a legit starting goaltender, and any defense led by Drew Doughty will be successful. They’ll no doubt continue rising, it’s just a matter of how much in 2010.

2010 Phoenix Coyotes Season Preview

Phoenix Coyotes Season PreviewThe surprise team of last season, the Phoenix is due for a letdown. Whether that means missing the playoffs is another story, but fourth in the division is a stretch for this team. They employ one of the best goalies in Ilya Bryzgalov, and have built a solid team in front of him. It’s hard to pinpoint where this team will land; there’s no way they can be as good as last year, is there? Is there?

2010 San Jose Sharks Season Preview

San Jose Sharks Season PreviewWhen you employ Dany Heatley, Joe Thornton and Patrick Marleau, you’re going to score goals, and that’s what the Sharks do best. They are an offense juggernaut and have been for such time. Unfortunately, that’s never translated into a Stanley Cup, and I don’t think they did enough in the offseason to change that. The signing of Antii Niemi was a step in that direction, but he had one of the best young defenses in the league playing in front of him; he doesn’t have that luxury in San Jose. It won’t be that bad, it just won’t be that good. I have no doubt they’ll be a force to be reckoned with in the regular season, but their postseason prospects won’t be much better.
