MLB Game Preview for Friday June 24, 2011: Washington Nationals @ Chicago White Sox

Online Betting Overview

MLB betting fans are getting a bit confused in the month of June. Is that the Washington Nationals with a 37-37 record? The MLB baseball news all month has been about the incredible play of the Washington Nationals and how the Nationals have pulled themselves to a .500 at nearly the half-way point of the season for the first time in the team’s history. This is no dream. The MLB fans in Washington are seeing some of the best baseball in the NL being played right now, and the Nationals do not show any signs of letting up. Washington has climbed to within nine and a half games of the NL East leading Philadelphia Phillies. While the Nationals will probably not contend for the NL East title, the fans just like to see Washington out of the basement this late in the season.

Chicago White Sox manager Ozzie Guillen had a point on that foul ball call off the plate last week. But in the press conference after the game, Guillen showed that he has learned something in the past couple of years and he kept his mouth shut about the call and the incident. The White Sox are trying to climb to .500 as they now sit at 37-39. Chicago is only four and a half games out of first place in the AL Central, and the first place Cleveland Indians are having problems of their own. The White Sox are playing good baseball as of late, but it may not be good enough to beat the red-hot Washington Nationals.

Washington Nationals

Jordan Zimmerman takes the mound for Washington in the game, and Zimmerman could be one of the best pitchers in the NL that gets almost no run support. Zimmerman in 5-6 this season but his ERA is at 3.08. He is on a three-game winning streak right now, but in his last two losses he only gave up two earned runs in each game. Zimmerman is an outstanding young pitcher that needs to get some help from his teammates. It should be noted that Zimmerman’s last two losses came in May, when the Nationals were struggling at the plate. Someone flicked on a switch in June and the Nationals are now ready to give Zimmerman all of the run support he needs to win this game.

Chicago White Sox

Edwin Jackson is the starting pitcher for the White Sox, and his 4-6 record and 4.47 ERA are indicative of his play this season. Jackson is 0-1 in his last four starts, and he has given up 14 earned runs in that stretch as well. Against good hitting teams, Jackson has had nothing but problems. Earlier in the season, he allowed seven earned runs to the Detroit Tigers in five and two-thirds innings pitched, and then a week later he allowed six earned runs to the New York Yankees in only four innings. Two months ago, Jackson could have handled the Washington Nationals. But in the month of June, he may not stand a chance.

The Bottom Line

The White Sox have been up and down all season long, but if they want to start putting together a run for first place in the AL Central then now may be the time to start. It is hard to say what will happen to the Nationals this season. But, for now, Washington, DC baseball fans are loving every minute of it.
