MLB Game Preview for Friday September 9, 2011: Oakland A’s @ Texas Rangers

Sports Book Overview

Not too long ago, the Texas Rangers looked to have a stranglehold on the AL West pennant. But, as the season wore on and the All-Star break ended, people started to wonder if the Rangers could sustain their high level of play into the end of the season without Cliff Lee. Just when the Rangers were losing momentum last season, Texas made the trade for Cliff Lee and the team vaulted into the World Series. MLB baseball betting fans know that the Rangers are good enough to compete in the regular season. But being the pennant leader is new to Texas, and they have never done it without a notable pitcher in the starting rotation. Now that stranglehold has been reduced to just a two and a half game lead in the AL West and the Rangers cannot seem to find the handle on winning again.

The Oakland A’s have a winning record at home but are terrible on the road. Oakland’s 26-46 road record is the main reason why the A’s fell out of contention in the AL West. But Oakland still has a very solid pitching rotation, and they have been able to string some wins together lately. In the last 10 starts, the A’s are 5-5 and just shutout the Kansas City Royals 7-0. Oakland will not be making any MLB baseball news with their play any time soon, but they certainly have the ability to be that thorn in the side of the Texas Rangers. Even though this game is being played in Texas, the Rangers have to be very careful of the Oakland A’s.

Texas Rangers

Colby Lewis starts on the mound for the Rangers in this game and he is looking to improve on his last three starts. Lewis’ game suddenly fell apart with a start on August 23rd against Boston Red Sox when he went six innings and gave up seven runs on nine hits to take the loss. In his next two starts, Lewis gave up nine runs and 15 hits. His most recent start was on September 3rd against the Red Sox again where he only lasted three and a third innings and was pulled after giving up four runs on seven hits. The recent betonline.com reviews for Colby Lewis have not been good, and the Rangers need him to turn his game around if the team wants to make the playoffs.

Oakland A’s

The A’s are deep with their starting rotation and Brandon McCarthy is an example of that depth. McCarty is 8-7 this season with a 3.41 ERA coming in to this game. But in his last 10 starts, McCarthy is 7-2 with a 3.26 ERA. He is another pitcher that the A’s are able to pull out of the bullpen and get quality starts from. His most recent start was a September 3rd complete game against the Seattle Mariners where he gave up no runs and only three hits. As he gets more starts, he is getting better. That is what could win him a permanent starting job.

The Bottom Line

Fishing contests are big sport in Texas, but the Rangers are having problems hooking a win lately. The conditions leading into this game do not favor Texas. The Rangers cannot score runs lately and they face a pitcher that threw a complete game shutout in his last start. The Angels are getting closer and closer in the AL West.

Pick: Oakland A’s
