MLB Game Preview for Wednesday August 31, 2011: New York Yankees @ Boston Red Sox

Sports Betting Online Overview

When the New York Yankees and Boston Red Sox collide in a series, the rest of the MLB world seems to stop. With the Red Sox a game and a half in front of the Yankees in the race for the AL East pennant, New York travels into Boston to try and climb back on top in the standings. The opening game of this series has C.C. Sabathia pitching against John Lackey. That should be a classic pitcher’s duel. But this second game of the series is an interesting combination of pitchers and hitters that will make this a very entertaining game.

The baseball betting world is usually split when it comes to the Yankees and the Red Sox. Half of the fans think the Yankees will win the pennant every year, and the other half think Boston will come out on top. This year is no exception as the Yankees and Red Sox have been neck and neck all season long. Up to this point, the Red Sox have dominated the Yankees in head to head games losing only two contests to New York all season long. The Red Sox look ready for this series as the team just got off a shut out win in Oakland. But it can be difficult to predict the outcome of a Yankees-Red Sox game, especially when the fans get loud and the emotion gets high.

Boston Red Sox

The Red Sox have a 7-3 record in the last 10 games and are riding a two-game winning streak. Boston sends ace Josh Beckett to the mound for this game and Beckett has been a source of MLB highlights the past month or so. Beckett is 5-2 in his last 10 starts and has put together a 2.77 ERA in that stretch. The last time Beckett faced the Yankees was on August 7th. He went six innings and gave up one earned run on six hits in a no-decision. Because of his back problems and other injuries, the Red Sox have been pulling Beckett out of games by the end of the sixth inning. That is when the strong Boston bullpen takes over and closes the game out for Beckett.

New York Yankees

Phil Hughes starts this game for the Yankees, and he still looks like he is struggling to come back from an injury that sidelined him for three months this season. MLB fans remember Hughes putting together one of the least impressive 18-8 records ever last season when he posted a 4.18 ERA. This season, the bad vibes that hit Hughes late last year have followed him into this season. His most recent start was August 25th against the Oakland A’s. In only two and two-thirds innings, Hughes gave up six runs on seven hits. The Yankees are fishing games out of the schedule for Hughes to start to see if he can perform in the playoffs. To this point, Hughes has not come through.

The Bottom Line

The Red Sox never seem to have a problem hitting Yankee pitching, and Boston should have an especially easy time against Hughes. But Hughes has the capacity to keep the game close if he has good control. Beckett’s momentum should be enough to keep the Yankees under control.

Pick: Boston Red Sox
