Pitching Probables: Shaun Marcum vs. Joe Blanton

As expected Shaun Marcum is enjoying success in the National League.  He is 2-1 so far and in his last outing shutout the Pirates for 7 innings.  It must be a great relief to not have to play the Yanks and Sox anymore.  Marcum has also has had some success against the Phillies in the past.  As a Blue Jay the team won all of his starts against the Phillies and last summer he held their powerful attack to just 5 hits in 6 innings while collecting a victory.  The change of scenery has been good even though the Brewers are struggling lately having lost all three of their weekend set against the Nationals while scoring just 8 runs in the process.  This is a good offensive team just waiting to really bust out.  Facing Joe Blanton in Philadelphia just might be what they need.

Any team looking to jump on the Phillies this season better take advantage of when Joe Blanton is on the hill.  Once a starter with promise in Oakland he now brings up the rear of the rotation in Philadelphia.  To be fair so would a slew of former Athletics and probably current ones too.  Blanton has not been effective in the early part of the season.  With two starts under his belt he has an ERA of more than 10 with poor peripherals numbers too.  He also has been batted around by the Brewers in the past giving up three homers in his lone start against them last year.  Last year the Phillies took 5 of 6 from the Brewers.  They will look to continue their good fortune against them starting tonight.

Prediction: Neither pitcher factors in the decision here as it is won late by the Phillies.  I am seeing a Ryan Howard homer in the 8th.  How’s that for a bold prediction.

Score Prediction: Philadelphia – 5 / Milwaukee  – 4
