After a good but not great start, the red hot and defending world champion San Francisco Giants travel to the north side of Chicago to take on the Cubs in the second game of a three-game weekend series at Wrigley Field.

The Giants entered this series having won six straight and eight of their previous ten to move into first place in the NL West. But that winning streak was snapped on Friday afternoon as the Cubs bombed the Giants the opening game of the series 11-4.

The victory improves the Cubs mediocre marks this season to 17-20 overall and 9-12 at home in the friendly confines of Wrigley Field. Chicago’s win moved them to within 4 ½ of NL Central leading St. Louis entering Friday night’s action.

Ryan Vogelsong will take the ball for the Giants, and he’ll be opposed by Doug Davis for the Cubs. Vogelsong is looking to build on his last outing when he went 6 1/3 shutout innings in a victory over Colorado during which he took a no-hitter into the sixth frame. Overall this season, Vogelsong is 2-0 in five starts with a 3.05 ERA. He has made five career starts against the Cubs and has just a 1-4 record with a bloated ERA of 7.59.

As for Davis, this is his first start of the season. The Cubs signed him in April after no one offered him a contract, and the former Brewers hurler pitched himself into shape in the minors. For his career, Davis is 91-101 with a 4.38 ERA.

The Giants would love to see last year’s NL Rookie of the Year, Buster Posey, begin to regain his form from a season ago. In 2011, Posey is hitting just .244 with 4 home runs and 19 RBI. Freddy Sanchez leads all healthy regulars in the Giants lineup with a .265. Pablo Sandoval is hitting .313 but is on the disabled list.

The Cubbies feature a young duo of table setters in Starling Castro (.331 average, 23 runs) and Darwin Barney (.326, 22 runs). Alfonso Soriano continues to be the long ball threat for the team with 11 – no other Cub has more than three.

The odds makers have the San Francisco Giants as a -1.5 point favorite with an run total of 8.5.

Matt’s Free Prediction:  Giants – Davis is a veteran and clearly won’t be spooked by pitching on a big stage such as this. But to have his first time back since last season, one in which he only pitched five times, against the defending world champs is too much to overcome.
