Golden State Warriors 2010 Preview & Prediction

Not since relocating from Philadelphia to San Francisco in 1962 have the Warriors undergone this much change in a single offseason. Gone from April’s finale are one-dimensional small forward Corey Maggetle, the untapped potential of Anthony Randolph and abevy of useful if overpriced parts, including Anthony Morrow, C.J. Watson, Ronny Turiaf and Kelenna Azubuike. Most important of all, however, the Warriors closed the book on the tenure of owner Chris Cohan, whose reign of non-success – one playoff berth and only two winning seasons in 15 years at the helm – tried the patience of one of the NBA’s most loyal followings. For a league-record price of $450 million, a group led by venture capitalist Joe Lacob and entertainment mogul Peter Guber bought out Cohan and the team’s minority owners on July 15. Lacob promised to “return the Warriors to greatness,” but most long-suffering fans would be satisfied with a few steps towards respectability in the short term. To that end, Golden State lured All-Star power forward David Lee cross-country from New York. The Warriors also went against their personal grain and signed a defense-first player in the form of ex-Miami small forward Dorell Wright. Mix that with the highscoring backcourt of Stephen Curry and Monta Ellis, and general manager Larry Riley expects the incoming owners to enjoy the results this season.

Golden State Warriors Coach: Keith Smart (1st season)

Golden State Warriors Projected Starters: PG Stephen Curry, SG Monta Ellis, SF Dorell Wright, PF David Lee, C Andris Biedrins.

Golden State Warriors Key Additions: F David Lee.

Golden State Warriors Key Losses: F Corey Maggette, F Ronny Turiaf.

2010 Golden State Warriors Point Guards:

Who is the point guard on this team? Is it Stephen Curry or Monta Ellis? The consensus is that Curry is the team’s point guard and he certainly looks like he’s ready to assume that role this season. The second-year player came on strong the second half of last season, almost overtaking front-running Tyreke Evans for Rookie of the Year honors. What’s most telling is that Curry played more effectively when Ellis wasn’t in the lineup. Curry’s shooting was well-known from his college days; however, what came as a pleasant surprise was his ball-handling and passing. His vision was better than some people expected and his decision-making gave the Warriors reason to install him at point guard. Newly acquired Charlie Bell figures to come off the bench. Bell is a steady journeyman who should be able to give Curry plenty of help. Taking pressure off Curry will be a hugely important job for Bell.

2010 Golden State Warriors Off Guards:

Ellis averaged career-highs in scoring, assists, steals and minutes last season, so why are the Warriors trying to trade him? One reason could be his bloated contract, which has four years and $44 million remaining. Another reason could be his unwillingness to accept a lessor role behind Curry – how will Ellis react with the arrival of Lee? Still another reason is with Curry and Ellis paired in the backcourt, the Warriors are awfully small. Then there’s Ellis’ lingering animosity after the team suspended him for 30 games after a Moped accident two years ago. If the Warriors don’t trade Ellis, they could do worse than having someone who can penetrate and slash to the basket and, at age 24, possesses plenty of potential to grow and get better.

2010 Golden State Warriors Small Forwards:

Lee gives the Warriors an inside presence they have lacked for nearly a decade. Lee was one of just three players (Chris Bosh, Zach Randolph) who averaged at least 20 points and 10 rebounds a game last season. Lee was an All-Star last season and he produced those numbers in New York coach Mike D’Antoni’s uptempo system, so he should adapt well to the Warriors run-and-gun style of play. However, the move to acquire Lee doesn’t come without questions. Some critics say Lee’s numbers are inflated because he did play in a fast-paced system and on a bad team. Welcome to the Warriors. Lee also has experience building chemistry in NBA orphanages.

2010 Golden State Warriors Power Forwards:

Anthony Randolph is a reason for optimism for Golden State fans. The 6-10 second-player finished the season scoring in double figures in 10 of his final 11 games. Randolph also produced a doubledouble in five of his last 10 games of the season. Look for him to be more involved in the offense this season.

2010 Golden State Warriors Centers:

Andris Biedrins comes closest to a real center, but he’s really a power forward maybe even a small forward. The Warriors hope Biedrins – who played in just 33 games while dealing with injuries and issues with Nelson last season – will rediscover his form from the 2008-09 season, when he averaged a doubledouble. The Warriors also have Dan Gadzuric, but he has averaged more than eight rebounds a game just once in his nine-year NBA career.
