Milwaukee Bucks 2010 Preview & Prediction

No doubt the 2010 offseason will go down in history as the time when an Eastern Conference framchise located in a water-front city beginning with “M” added significant pieces that would make it an NBA force. That’s right, the Milwaukee Bucks had one heck of an offseason, making major roster upgrades to complement the core of the franchise – second-year point guard Brandon Jennings and sixth-year center Andrew Bogut. A strong defensive team added scoring punch. A thin roster now has quality depth. Fear The Deer, indeed.

Milwaukee Bucks Coach: Scott Skiles (3rd season)

Milwaukee Bucks Projected Starters: PG Brandon Jennings, SG John Salmons, SF Corey Maggette, PF Drew Gooden, C Andrew Bogut.

Milwaukee Bucks Key Additions: F Drew Gooden, F Corey Maggette, G Earl Boykins, F Jon Brockman.

Milwaukee Bucks Key Losses: F Kurt Thomas, G Luke Ridnour.

2010 Milwaukee Bucks Point Guards:

The Bucks’ gamble paid off. When they chose Jennings with the 10th overall pick in the 2009 NBA Draft, some league officials thought it was a mistake. Jennings was unproven – having had one non-descript season in Italy after by passing college – and didn’t have a pro body, weighing just over 160 pounds. Jennings’ critics also had concerns about his wild play on the court and his immature ways off it. But Jennings quickly proved he was the steal of the draft when he exploded for 55 points – the most by any NBA player lst season – against the Golden State Warnors. Jennings was also a workhorse. He started every single regular- and postseason game. What he did as a rookie was outstanding, he put Bucks’ basketball on the map. Jennings, who averaged 32.6 minutes last season, is expected to play even more this season. That means there’ll likely be precious little playing time for veteran Keyon Dooling, the former New Jersey Net whom the Bucks signed over the summer to replace the departed Luke Ridnour.

2010 Milwaukee Bucks Off Guards:

After star Michael Redd suffered a serious knee injury for the second straight season, the Bucks desperately needed a high-octane scorer to replace him. They found one in John Salmons. Acquired in a multi-player trade with the Chicago Bulls in February, Salmons instantly became the Bucks’ go-to guy. He averaged 19.9 points in the 30 remaining regular season games for the Bucks. More importantly, the Bucks posted an impressive 22-8 record after Salmons’ arrival to secure a spot in the playoffs. The Bucks showed how much they think of Salmons by re-signing him to a five-year, $42 million contract. With Redd’s future shaky – he isn’t expected to start practicing with the team, until January – the Bucks obtained Chris Douglas-Roberts in an offseason trade from the New Jersey Nets.

2010 Milwaukee Bucks Small Forwards:

The Bucks were one of the worst teams at getting to the free throw line last season. That isn’t likely to be the case this season. In Corey Maggette, whom they acquired from Golden State during the summer, the Bucks now have a player who’ll consistently draw fouls. Maggette attempted 551 free throws last season. The Bucks’ leader in that category last season was Salmons, who shot a combined 305 free throws with Milwaukee and Chicago. Maggette’s penchant for getting to the line enabled him to average 19.8 points a game last season – 12th-best in the NBA. Maggette isn’t assured of starting, though. Bucks coach Scott Skiles is a big fan of Carlos Delfino, who started 66 games and averaged 30.4 minutes last season. Delfino isn’t nearly as skilled offensively as Maggette, but he is a much better defender and more team-oriented. Versatile rookie Darington Hobson, a second-round draft choice, could also vie for some playing time. The 6-7 Hobson has the size to play small forward and shooting guard and, because of his terrific passing skills, may even playa little point guard.

2010 Milwaukee Bucks Power Forwards:

Bucks officials accomplished their mission of upgrading this position over the summer. While Luc Mbah a Moute, last season’s starting power forward, is a terrific all-around defender, he’s only 6-foot-8 and had trouble against taller players at the position. Thus, the Bucks were delighted to sign free-agent Drew Gooden, who is 6-10 and isn’t afraid of contact. Gooden is also a solid scorer, possessing a nice mid-range shot. The addition of Gooden will enable the Bucks to gradually bring along Larry Sanders, whom they selected with the 15th overall pick. Sanders, who played at Virginia Commonwealth, has intriguing physical skills: He runs the floor extremely well and was the fastest big man in the draft – and has an imposing 7-5 wingspan. Young Ersan Ilyasova is coming off a solid season and will likely swing between the big and small forward positions. The Bucks also added some interior toughness when they acquired Jon Brockman from Sacramento who, at last count, has sustained four broken noses.

2010 Milwaukee Bucks Centers:

Andrew Bogut is on the cusp of greatness. The 7-foot center has seen his game grow every season since being the No.1 overall selection in the 2005 NBA Draft. Last season, Bogut emerged as one of the best at his position in the league and earned All-NBA third-team honors. Bogut not only established himself as a potent low-post scorer – he averaged 15.9 points a game – but he excelled as a defender by averaging 10.2 rebounds and 2.5 blocked shots. The only concern regarding Bogut is his health. He suffered elbow, wrist and hand injuries in a game against the Phoenix Suns, forcing him to miss the final six regular season games and the entire playoffs. Bogut’s backups from last season – Kurt Thomas and Dan Gadzuric – have moved on. Thomas signed with Chicago and Gadzuric was dealt to Golden State. That means Gooden and Sanders, both true power forwards, will occasionally slide over to the center spot when Bogut takes a seat.
