2009-2010 Alabama Season Preview

At mid-major, under-the-radar Virginia Commonwealth, Anthony Grant accomplished two milestones not recently seen at Alabama.

In 2007, his team earned a dramatic NCAA Tournament victory when a buzzer beater against Duke made him a national name. In 2009, Grant saw his star point guard, Eric Maynor, taken in the first round of the NBA Draft.

Meanwhile, the Crimson Tide has not reached March Madness in three seasons and hasn’t seen a player go in the first round since Gerald Wallace in 2001. Such factors contributed to the ousting of long-time coach Mark Gottfried and the celebrated hiring of Grant.

When the new coach says his VA team will remind him more of his Rams than of past Alabama squads, that’s positive news.

By inheriting an athletic team whose main loss was wing Alonzo Gee, Grant has the opportunity to rid the program of lackluster play and engineer a quick turnaround.

Alabama Backcourt

When Alabama lost point guard Ronald Steele midseason in 2008-09, Mikhail Torrance emerged from the bench to score in bunches. Twenty-point games were not rare, and the senior figures to be a key factor in the program’s attempted resurgence. But then he has also played shooting guard, leaving one to wonder if he’ll return there.

Diminutive senior Anthony Brock, whose clutch 3-point shooting often bailed his team out late, is a possibility to run the show, as is Grant’s first signee, Ben Eblen.

Gee’s toughness will be missed, as will his 15 points and 7.2 rebounds per game. But there are options to take his place. Senario Hillman, an eye-popping dunker, is honing his jumper and improving his defensive knowledge to be steadier. Andrew Steele, who is 6-3, is a physical, on-ball defender, and signee Charvez Davis brings his 3-point marksmanship from junior college.

Alabama Frontcourt

Former coveted recruit JaMychal Green hopes to build on a promising freshman season that included 10.3 points and 7.6 rebounds per game. The sky is the limit, and Green has professed a desire to work himself into better shape under Grant, along with increasing his offensive creativity and staying out of foul trouble.

Green is a force and is complemented by 6-9 Justin Knox and sound 6-8 reserve Demetrius Jemison. Signee Chris Hines, 6-8, will also add depth.

But the big expectations among fans are reserved for Tony Mitchell, the 6-6 wing who delayed enrollment a year while fighting to be eligible. A complete player as a prep star who excelled on both ends, Mitchell could fill Gee’s void immediately from the small forward spot.

2009-2010 Alabama Predictions

Grant hasn’t watched film from last season, choosing to avoid preconceived notions. That’s a smart move, considering the team didn’t always display defensive intensity or selflessness. Everyone receives a clean slate with Grant. Alabama’s recent recruiting classes have been highly touted and Grant appears to have the raw materials on hand. The hope among a suddenly energized fan base is that he can whip the players into shape for VA’s first NCAA Tournament appearance since 2006.
