2009-2010 Auburn Season Preview

It happened slowly. Then, all of the sudden. In Jeff Lebo’s first four seasons at Auburn, there were no postseason appearances and, it appeared, no progress. Midway through 2008-09, with a 3-5 mark in the Southeastern Conference, it seemed nothing would change, and that Lebo might be headed for unemployment.

But after more than four years of waiting, progress finally came. Auburn won eight of its last nine SEC games and ended the season with 11 victories in its final 13. The flourish nearly resulted in an NCAA Tournament berth, though the Tigers settled for reaching the NIT quarterfinals.

It also means Lebo is back for a sixth season, one he hopes will prove the finish was no fluke.

Even with a solid recruiting class, the Tigers will be hard-pressed to overcome the loss of forward Korvotney Barber and guards Quantez Robertson and Rasheem Barrett. But there is a chance.

Auburn Backcourt

The Tigers may have lost some firepower, but they return their sure-handed point guard. Senior DeWayne Reed averaged 13.2 points and 3.7 assists last season.

He’ll be joined in the backcourt by senior Tay Waller, whose accelerated progression helped lead to Auburn’s improvement. A junior college transfer, Waller averaged 12.1 points per game with 100 3-pointers. He still has several areas he wants to improve upon.

The Tigers will miss Robertson (6.0 points), and Barrett (9.9 points), and the team must find another shooter. Given the potential flashed by former star recruit Frankie Sullivan, he may fill the void. So may Oklahoma transfer Tony Neysmith.

Auburn Frontcourt

For years, Auburn has featured a lineup stuffed with guards. Last year, it all revolved around Barber, the 6-7 forward who poured in 12.8 points and collected 9.6 rebounds per game. There may not be a player to replace his contributions, but several will try to make it happen through a cumulative effect.

Brendon Knox found his way onto the floor as the year went on, but that was mostly because center Johnnie Lett was limited to just eight starts due to a leg injury. Before his ailment, Lett pulled down 3.4 rebounds in just 12.7 minutes per game.

Yet the senior underwent ankle surgery in the offseason because he couldn’t elevate. When healthy, Lett was valuable.

Reinforcements come from signees Rob Chubb, a tough rebounder, and Kenny Gabriel, a junior college transfer who can shoot.

2009-2010 Auburn Predictions

The Tigers may have turned the corner last season with a 24-12 mark that was second-best in school history, but can they solidify their progress after losing three of their best players from a year ago? That depends on the development of players like Lett, Sullivan and Waller.

Lebo’s status figures to be sturdier than it was the previous season, but he may need another successful season to allow him to be Auburn’s coach when a $92-million arena opens for 2010-11. Auburn Finish in the SEC: 4th in West Division
