2009-2010 Florida Season Preview

Competing in the NIT isn’t what Chandler Parsons thought he’d be in for after arriving at Florida three years ago.

The Gators had just won consecutive national championships and were the toast of college basketball. Parsons figured he would at least get to compete in the NCAA Tournament.

Instead, Florida has spent the past two postseasons relegated to the NIT.

Though the Gators improved slightly to finish third in the Southeastern Conference’s East division at 9-7 last season, Florida botched a handful of those games rendering its record not good enough to earn an invite to the Big Dance.

To get there, they’ll have to do it without Walter Hodge, a reliable leader, and Nick Calathes, a point guard who dominated the floor in leading the team in scoring and steals.

Florida still has several significant returnees such as forward Alex Tyus and point guard Erving Walker, but the team will have an even more difficult time making that climb with so many other experienced and talent-laden teams in the league.

Florida Backcourt

Walker was fearless and aggressive as a freshman. He was third on the team with 10.1 points per game and averaged 2.4 assists while using his quickness to his advantage.

Walker will be joined by freshman Kenny Boynton, another speedy guard who can score. Together, the duo will allow the Gators to push the ball more and give the team more athleticism in the backcourt.

Of the returning players, Lanier expects 6-4 Ray Shipman to become more reliable.

Giving the team a steady effort is Parsons’ goal for next season. He has been one of the team’s best rebounders, but somewhat of an enigma offensively. Parsons made 10-of-ll field goals for 27 points against Vanderbilt in the midst of a stretch where he scored in double figures in eight of 10 games, but then couldn’t sustain the effort.

Lanier hopes Parsons will take some pressure off himself so he can be more relaxed on offense.

Florida Frontcourt

Despite not being able to play his natural position of power forward, Tyus did an admirable job battling against the league’s centers. He was second on the team in points with 12.5 per game, first in rebounding with 6.2 per game and had 28 blocks.

But the 6-8 Tyus could be even more productive now that Georgetown transfer Vernon Macklin is eligible. Macklin is more suited to play center, which will allow Tyus to slide to the four-spot.

The Gators are deep up front and reliable forward Dan Werner will be one of the leaders. Two players who should be improved are 6-10 sophomores Eloy Vargas and Kenny Kadji. As a freshman, Vargas never recovered from offseason ankle surgery. Kadji showed potential but was up and down.

The Gators added a skilled 6-10 forward in freshman Erik Murphy, who will extend defenses with his shot-making ability.

2009-2010 Florida Predictions

The Gators were a few plays away from winning a lot more games last season. Ultimately, the team’s fate will depend on its ability to rebound and play D.
