2009-2010 Kentucky Season Preview

John Calipari’s arrival at Kentucky has created a domino effect, transforming the wildcats from the unfamiliar role of pretender to a Final Four contender.

Since Calipari left Memphis to become the 22nd coach in UK history, he has helped convince NBA-bound forward Patrick Patterson to return for his junior season and signed blue-chip recruits John Wall, Eric Bledsoe and DeMarcus Cousins.

Kentucky Backcourt

The Wildcats averaged a whopping 16.9 turnovers per game last season, a number that should shrink considerably with Wall and Bledsoe handling the ball while orchestrating Calipari’s dribble-drive offense.

Wall is a playmaker adept at protecting the ball and driving past defenders, while Bledsoe is an athletic freak, with a six-to-eight foot wingspan, who jumps about 40 inches and is adept at beating people off the dribble and finding teammates.

The dynamic freshmen should allow versatile 6-6 DeAndre Liggins to play more on the wing. Miller never flourished under previous coach Billy Gillispie, but should now have more freedom to use his athleticism and create scoring opportunities. Miller’s confidence should also increase after representing the U.S. in the FIBA Under 19 World Championship this summer.

Giving the team added depth in the backcourt will be Kentucky Mr. Basketball Jon Hood, who averaged 28 points per game as a high school senior.

Kentucky Frontcourt

Patterson’s return gives the Wildcats a terrific scoring threat and rebounding machine. But though he averaged 17.9 points and 9.3 rebounds per game, Patterson still wasn’t satisfied with his performance last season so he spent more than a month training with workout guru Frank Matrisciano, who helped Oklahoma’s Blake Griffin become the No.1 pick in this year’s NBA Draft.

Another good sign for UK fans is the fact that freshman Daniel Orton spent part of his summer working out with Matrisciano. Orton committed to UK before Calipari arrived and decided to stay, giving the team another strong low-post player.

Then Calipari pulled off another coup by landing Cousins, an aggressive scorer and shot-blocker that is a force to be reckoned with.

With so many capable scorers, defensive-minded Perry Stevenson may continue to earn minutes if he continues to focus on rebounding and blocking shots.

2009-2010 Kentucky Predictions

Though most people think finding enough minutes to keep everyone happy will be Calipari’s only challenge, but living up to the Kentucky faithful’s expectations is another.
