2009-2010 Mississippi Season Preview

Before every season, there is a strong sense of anticipation. Coaches can’t help but view their incoming freshmen as unwrapped presents with the first day of practice serving as the holiday.

Yet when school began for Ole Miss coach Andy Kennedy, the unseen prospects weren’t the only subjects of inspection. Kennedy received a gift of at least three returning players, too.

By the 12th game of 2008-09, point guard Chris Warren (knee) and guards Eniel Polynice (leg) and Trevor Gaskins (knee) were all gone for the season with injuries. All are back, providing Kennedy with the sense that he is welcoming two recruiting classes to an experienced team that includes U.S. Under 19 National Team member Terrico White.

Mississippi Backcourt

The 5-10 Warren led his team during a freshman season that earned him All-SEC honors. And he was doing so as a sophomore until Game 11, when he hit the deck with torn knee ligaments. Gone were his 19.6 points, four assists and ability to make others better. Throw in the fact that Polynice was done after one game and Gaskins never played a game, and the Rebels floundered without three key parts.

All had returned by the end of the summer, with Gaskins the furthest along because his occurred first.

The ailments weren’t fun, but it did accelerate the maturation of others. The silky White averaged 13.7 points as the conference’s Freshman of the Year, and then raised his profile with his summer performance.

Wing Zach Graham, the team’s best 3-point threat, will be 100 percent after fighting through a partially torn patella tendon last season, too. Suddenly, even with star David Huertas opting to play overseas, the Rebels are overflowing with backcourt skill.

Mississippi Frontcourt

Ole Miss’ frontcourt was dealt a tough blow when burgeoning forward Malcolm White, a 6-9, 220-pounder who averaged 7.2 points and 5.7 rebounds, decided to transfer to LSU to be closer to home. Coaches hate to put themselves in a position where they are unprepared, but Kennedy admitted the move wasn’t what he was expecting.

Terrance Henry, 6-9, had flashed potential and Murphy Holloway had a productive freshman season highlighted by 6.6 rebounds per game and a total of 36 steals. The two signees will help, as well.

Forwards Reginald Buckner, Mr. Basketball in Memphis, and DeAngelo Riley, a junior college transfer, may find court time immediately. Buckner is a small forward, while Riley’s ability to block shots and rebound will be valuable.

2009-2010 Mississippi Predictions

Last year resembled a soap opera for Ole Miss, the injuries combining with Kennedy’s much-publicized arrest in a taxi cab in Cincinnati. It all contributed to a 16-15 overall record and 7-9 mark in the SEC. The coach eventually pleaded down to a reduced charge of disorderly conduct with no jail time, and the injuries healed. It’s a new season with rejuvenated players and new hopes.

Kennedy hopes it will be calmer and more productive. Mississippi Finish in the SEC: 2nd in West Division
