2009-2010 Mississippi State Season Preview

Rick Stansbury’s goals are the same every year – To compete for championships.

His teams have succeeded in each of the past three seasons, taking home two Southeastern Conference West titles and then an SEC Tournament crown last season. Considering the Bulldogs return all five starters including Jarvis Varnado – the nation’s top shot-blocker – they had planned to set their sights just as high for 2009-10.

Then Renardo Sidney called and asked Stansbury to take him.

The 6-10, 2S0-pound national recruit had been rejected by USC, and sought a return to his childhood home of Mississippi. If he retains his amateur status when the NCAA finishes its investigation into loans taken out by his family, the SEC may just send its West plaques to Starkville.

And the NCAA Tournament better look out.

Mississippi State Backcourt

Before last season, there were serious questions at point guard. Then Dee Bost began playing and wound up averaging 10.9 points and 4.3 assists in helping his team secure an NCAA Tournament berth.

Stewart, the senior who made 72 3-pointers, is back and his three years as a starter could loom large if there are national implications.

Junior gunner Ravern Johnson looks to improve on his team-high 83 makes from deep. Both players were big targets for Bost, as was tough-as-nails Phil Turner. Signee Shaunessy Smith could be in the mix, too. It’s quite a difference from a year ago.

Mississippi State Frontcourt

MSU spent much of last season with four guards around the 6-9 Varnado. It made the team susceptible on the boards and could have hurt defensively, too. Except that the player nicknamed "Swat" sent back an astounding 170 shots. The SEC Defensive Player of the Year has 394 blocks, just 19 shy of Shaquille O’Neal’s conference mark and 142 from the NCAA record.

When he decided to return for his senior season instead of entering the NBA Draft, the Bulldogs’ expectations spiked.

Varnado will not have to do it all. Mercurial big man Kodi Augustus and wing Romero Osby should figure prominently, and beefy Elgin Bailey comes off the bench. But don’t forget the newcomers.

Signee John Riek, a 7-2 project, has endless potential if he gets over his nagging leg injuries. And then there is Sidney, considered by many a certain one-and-done player who may end up none-and-done if the NCAA stalemate holds.

2009-2010 Mississippi State Predictions

On paper, Mississippi State is the odds-on favorite in the West and a possible competitor to Kentucky overall. The big-game experience gained from last year’s run through the SEC Tournament won’t hurt, either. None of that will change if Sidney becomes eligible.

But if he is, expectations will elevate that much more.

There could be two game-changers in the post, a cerebral floor general, and grizzled veterans at guard. In short, Stansbury may be looking at his best team ever. In the past eight seasons, MSU is second only to Kentucky in SEC titles with one overall, four divisional, and one tournament. Mississippi State Finish in the SEC: 1st in West Division
