2009-2010 Tennessee Season Preview

For the first time since Bruce Pearl took over at Tennessee the Vols didn’t quite live up to expectations last season. That isn’t a knock against Pearl or the team, rather a residual effect of what happens when you achieve so much success in a short period of time.

Despite losing three tremendous guards, the Vols were ranked No. 14 in the Associated Press preseason poll and projected to fare well in the NCAA Tournament. With a bunch of new faces, however, the team turned out to be good, just not spectacular. Pearl and Tennessee fans expected more, but last season could hardly be considered a disaster.

The Vols finished 21-13 and 10-6 in the Southeastern Conference to win a share of the East, reached the championship game of the league tournament for the first time since 1991 and made a fourth straight NCAA appearance. At times, though, they struggled in close games, finishing 4-6 in contests decided by five points or less.

The feeling that the Vols could have done more is what has them preparing harder for this season.

Tennessee Backcourt

Bobby Maze was a good playmaker who had 109 assists to 54 turnovers last season. He will be pushed and helped by the addition of Melvin Goins, giving the team more options.

Hopson demonstrated he could be a lethal scorer and spent part of the summer working with a shooting coach to reduce the arc in his 3-pointer, which should help his accuracy.

Hopson has also seen improvement in many of his teammates, including shooter Cameron Tatum and defensive stopper Josh Tabb. Tabb served as Maze’s backup at times, but will be able to play more on the wing with Goins on board.

Versatile lefty J.P. Prince is the team’s third leading returning scorer and should be fully recovered from off season shoulder surgery.

Tennessee Frontcourt

For the second straight season, Vols coaches, fans and players were relieved to learn that multi-skilled forward Tyler Smith was returning to the team instead of turning pro. Smith has made the All-SEC first team the past two seasons.

Joining him up front will be another multidimensional player in 6-9 Wayne Chism, who led the team in rebounds and shot 32 percent from 3-point range last season.

As a freshman, Emmanuel Negedu was a raw talent and should be improved with more experience.

Physical center Brian Williams has worked on his defense during pickup games and is a fine rebounder. The team also added 6-8 freshman Kenny Hall, a good low-post scorer with a bright future.

2009-2010 Tennessee Predictions

Expectations around Good ’01 Rocky Top should be high again for a good reason. If everyone stays healthy, it’s doubtful the team will underachieve.
