2009 Record: 8-5 ACC Record: 5-3 2010 Returning Starters: 16: 5 Offense, 5 Defense, Kicker

Coach: Frank Spaziani (Boston College and overall: 9-5 1year (plus game as Interim In 2006))

Offensive Coordinators: Gary Tranquill Defensive Coordinators: Bill McGovern

2010 Boston College Players to Watch: RB Mantel Harris, WR Colin Larmond, LT Anthony Castonzo, DE Alex Albright, LB Luke Kuechly, LB Mark Herzlich, FS Wes Davis

2010 Boston College Strengths:
With a reasonably experienced offensive line. the Eagles should be able to run the ball, especially with Harris in the backfield. The Iinebacklng corps could be one of the best in the ACC if not all of college football.

2010 Boston College Weaknesses:
The Eagles are thin on the defensive line, where the players who need to step up don’t have much experience. Wide receiver, where there Is also adearth of experience, Is abig concern. Even the offensive line, which can be good, has some depth Issues.

2010 Boston College Offense:

Boston College’s quarterback position is more stable than it was last year, but that doesn’t mean it’s settled. Dave Shinskie, a former pro baseball player who won the job last year as a 26-year-old freshman, played admirably considering some less than ideal circumstances – he hadn’t played football in seven years, he didn’t sign until June and he missed half the summer drills with a broken rib. Despite all that, he set a BC freshman record with 15 touchdown passes. But he also threw 14 interceptions. Shinskie will be pushed by fellow sophomore Mike Marscovetra, as well as true freshmen Chase Rettig and Josh Bordner. Marscovetra was the star of the spring game, completing 13 of 16 passes for 146 yards and a touchdown. The line will be anchored by senior left tackle Anthony Castonzo, but the Eagles have a key loss in center Matt Tennant. Junior Nate Richman, moving from guard, is the favorite to fiJI the spot. The line will be blocking for perhaps the best back in the ACC, junior Montel Harris, who set freshman and sophomore rushing records at BC in his first two years. The biggest question mark is at wide receiver. Rich Gunnell, one of the most productive receivers the Eagles have ever had, and Justin Jarvis, who made his share of big plays, have graduated. The athletic and lanky Colin Larmond, Jr., will be asked to fill much of the void, but he can’t do it all on his own.

2010 Boston College Defense:

The Eagles will have a very good linebacking corps – with a chance to be great. Mark Herzlich, the 2008 ACC Defensive Player of the Year, is attempting to make what would be an amazing comeback from cancer. If he can return, he’ll join Luke Kuechly, the 2009 ACC Defensive Rookie of the Year, to form one of the better linebacking groups in the school’s history. The plan is for Kuechly to move from the weakside to the middle to replace Mike McLaughlin. If Herzlich returns, he’ll go back to the strong side where his athleticism will be utilized. The big question mark will be on the defensive line, especially the interior. Damik Scafe, who missed the spring with a shoulder injury, will be back in one of the spots. He played well last year.

2010 Boston College Special Teams:

Ryan Quigley, a very good punter, is looking to replace placekicker Steve Aponavicius, who walked on in 2006 and became the all-time leading scorer in Eagles history. DeLeon Gause will get a chance to return punts, as well as kickoffs, along with Montel Harris.

2010 Boston College Predictions:

The Eagles should be right in the ACC Atlantic hunt again, as they’ve been since joining the league in 2005. Though Harris will be a big part of the offense, they’ll need improved quarterback play from whoever takes the snaps. Defensively, the line is a big question mark, but BC should be good at the next two levels of defense.
