While the 2010 NCAA college football season does not start for a couple of months it is not too early to take a look at each of the major conferences to see which teams have the best chance to end up in this year’s BCS Championship Game. Today we take a look at all the teams in the Atlantic Coast Conference along with their current odds to win a national title.

ACC Atlantic Division

Clemson – Current odds to win a National Championship: 40-1

2009- Overall record 9-5     Conference record 6-2        Home 7-2   Away 2-3

Clemson 2010 Outlook – With RB C.J. Spiller gone to the NFL it will be up to Andre Ellington or Jamie Harper to fill the void. Freshman RB Roderick McDowell is an up and coming force and do not be surprised to see him work his way into the lineup by mid season. Another issue for the Tigers is whether or not QB Kyle Parker decides to stick with football or focus his attention on a career in the MLB. If he comes back they have a great chance to once again end up in the conference title game.

Boston College - BSC Championship Odds: 125-1

2009- Overall record 8-5     Conference record 5-3         Home 6-1   Away 2-4

Boston College 2010 Outlook – B.C .returns 15 starters from last year’s squad including  TB Montel Harris who rushed for 1457 yards last season. While the quarterback job is still wide open, Dave Shinskie still has the inside track to be the starter on opening day. Their defense should be better with LB Luke Kuechly returning to the lineup. Their overall record will be aided by a soft schedule which will help come bowl selection time.

Florida State - BCS Championship Odds: 50-1

2009- Overall record 7-6     Conference record 4-4         Home 4-3    Away 3-3

Florida State 2010 Outlook – Jimbo Fisher replaces Bobby Bowden as the Seminoles head coach but the overall team chemistry should remain the same. QB Christian Ponder returns along with WR Bert Reed to form a potent combination on offense. Mark Stoops takes over as defensive coordinator and will try and make this unit a bit more opportunistic in terms of creating turnovers with his new zone oriented scheme. This could be one of the most talented Seminole teams in the past 10 years giving them a great chance to get back on top in the ACC this season.

Wake Forest - BCS Championship Odds: 125-1

2009- Overall record 5-7       Conference record 3-5        Home 4-3   Away 1-4

Wake Forest 2010 Outlook – WR’s Marshall Williams and Devon Brown return but they are still trying to find a replacement for departed QB Riley Skinner. Right now Skyler Jones appears to be the likely candidate as he can bring some mobility to the position. RB Josh Adams, who led the Demon Deacons with 540 yards last season is back and will be counted on to carry the load on a very mediocre offense. They do have some young talent but it could be a long season for Wake as they are still probably a year away from being competitive in the conference.

North Carolina State - BCS Championship Odds: 100-1

2009- Overall record 5-7       Conference record 2-6         Home 5-3     Away 0-4

North Carolina State 2010 Outlook – The Wolfpack return 12 starters from last season including QB Russell Wilson, who is poised for a tremendously productive season. RB James Washington will be the primary ball carrier and should be able to compliment Wilson by providing a solid ground attack. LB Nate Irving’s return will help, but their defense is still suspect especially up  front as all their defensive linemen are first time starters.

Maryland - BCS Championship Odds: Off

2009- Overall record 2-10      Conference record 1-7         Home 2-5     Away 0-5

Maryland 2010 Outlook – In all likelihood Jamarr Robinson will be the Terrapins starting quarterback come opening day. Look for WR Torrey Smith to be his primary target as he led the team in receiving last year with 824 yards. With three new starters in the secondary, this will be one of the biggest question marks on an all ready sketchy defense.

Georgia Tech – BCS Championship Odds: 50-1

2009- Overall record 11-3        Conference record 7-3 (ACC Champions)      Home 5-2    Away 6-1

Georgia Tech 2010 Outlook – The Yellow Jackets have 15 starters back from last year’s team including QB Josh Nesbitt and RB’s Anthony Allen and Roddy Jones. They will also have WR’s Stephen Hill and Tyler Melton giving them one of the most potent offenses in the conference.  Former Virginia head coach Al Groh takes over the duties as defensive coordinator and has plans to switch to a 3-4 scheme which could take a bit of adjusting to given their current personnel. If the defense can quickly gel, Georgia Tech has a good chance to defend their conference title.

Virginia Tech – BCS Championship Odds: 18-1

2009- Overall record 10-3         Conference record 6-2            Home 5-2     Away 5-1

Virginia Tech 2010 Outlook – The Hokies return 13 starters from last year’s squad and have set their expectations on not only a conference title but a national one as well. QB Tyrod Taylor is back along with TB Ryan Williams who led the team in rushing with 1,655 yards. They should also have TB Ryan Evans back as he appears to be fully recovered from a torn ACL he suffered last year. These two should combine to form an explosive backfield for Tech. The big question mark for this team is can the defense play well enough to keep them in the tough games on the schedule?

Miami - BCS Championship Odds: 18-1

2009- Overall record 9-4             Conference record 5-3           Home 5-1     Away 4-3

Miami 2010 Outlook – Redshirt freshman RB Lamar Miller was extremely impressive in spring practice and along with Damien Berry and Storm Johnson give the Hurricanes a number of options in the backfield. They are also deep at the quarterback position with Jacory Harris or A.J. Highsmith ending up as the starter on opening day. Right now it appears that Harris has the early edge. The defense should one of their best in years with eight starters returning from last year’s team. With the overall talent on this team, look for Miami to be squarely in the mix for the conference championship.

North Carolina – BCS Championship Odds: 65-1

2009- Overall record 8-5              Conference record 4-4             Home 5-3      Away 3-2

North Carolina 2010 Outlook – With four of five starters returning from last year, the offensive line should be the strength of this team. All in all, the Tar Heels have 18 starter returning from last year. The big question will be can QB T.J. Yates hold onto his starting spot or will a very talented Bryn Renner win the job outright. WR Greg Little, who led the team in receiving last year with 724 yards, is back and poised for an even better season in 2010.

Duke - BCS Championship Odds: Off

2009- Overall record 5-7               Conference record 3-5              Home 2-4     Away 3-3

Duke 2010 Outlook – Duke returns nine starters on offense including RB Desmond Scott and WR Donovan Varner. Varner led the team with 1,047 receiving yards last season and should be able to put up some big numbers again this year. The Blue Devils are hoping that QB Sean Renfree will be ready by opening day as he recovers from a torn ACL he suffered last season.  If he is ready to go, Duke actually has a shot at winning enough games to become bowl eligible.

Virginia – BCS Championship Odds: Off

2009- Overall record 3-9               Conference record 2-6               Home 1-6     Away 2-3

Virginia 2010 Outlook – First year head coach Mike London takes over the reins from the departed Al Groh, who was let go after last season. They will have 12 starters back from last year’s team including QB Mark Verica and WR Kris Burd. London is already shaking things up on defense switching from Groh’s 3-4 back to the traditional 4-3 scheme in an effort to better utilize the current talent they have. Since they are basically rebuilding from the ground up, expect another long season for the Cavaliers.
