2009 Record: 12-1 Big East Record: 7-0 2010 Returning Starters: 13: 7 Offense, 5 Defense, Kicker,

Coach: Butch Jones (Cincinnati 1st year)

Offensive Coordinators: Mike Bajakian Defensive Coordinators: Tim Banks, John Jancek

2010 Cincinnati Players to Watch: QB Zach Collaros, RB Isaiah Pead, TE Ben GUidugll, WR Armon Binns, WR Vidal Hazelton, DL Derek Wolfe, LB J.K. Schaffer

2010 Cincinnati Strengths:
Collaros could be one of the league’s best quarterbacks. His receiving corps is deep and talented. Pead is poised for a breakout year. Perhaps more Importantly, this program has developed a winning attitude during the past two years, going 23-2 during the regular season before losing In two straight BCS bowl games.

2010 Cincinnati Weaknesses:
The Bearcats are unproven on defense, where depth is an issue. Unlike the past few years, when Brian Kelly was able to shuffle Quarterbacks with little drop-off in production, Collaros must stay healthy if Cincinnati is going to win the Big East again.

2010 Cincinnati Offense:

Cincinnati scored so quickly under former coach Brian Kelly that the defense eventually complained that it couldn’t get any rest before having to go back onto the field. Those defenders might have a similar problem this year because the offense should be loaded again under new coach Butch Jones. Quarterback Tony Pike – who led the Big East in passing last year – is gone, but junior Zach Collaros is more than a capable replacement. Collaros, who has never lost a game he started at quarterback in either high school or college, started four games last year when Pike was hurt. Collaros has a strong, accurate arm, but he also has the ability to make things happen with his legs. Last year, he passed for 1,434 yards and 10 touchdowns and rushed for 344 yards. He will enter fall practice as the unquestioned leader of the offense. The Bearcats are deep and talented at wide receiver, even with the departure of Mardy Gilyard. Returning are Armon Binns and D.J. Woods, the team’s second- and third-leading receivers last year. And USC transfer Vidal Hazelton is set to take Gilyard’s spot. Senior tight end Ben Guidugli was a secondteam all-conference pick last year with 27 catches for 364 yards. The Bearcats have a talented back in Isaiah Pead, who averaged 6.7 yards per carry last year. He fIgures to get more carries with Jones running the show.

2010 Cincinnati Defense:

Last year, the Bearcats surrendered an average of 471 yards and 39.4 points over their last fIve games and fInished last in the Big East in total defense. Jones, who is installing a 4-3 alignment after last year’s 3-4, has higher expectations for his defense and spends more time on that side of the ball than Kelly, who took the Notre Dame job. This is a young defense, with only one projected senior starter – middle linebacker Dorian Davis, who was a backup last season. But there are a lot of players who have substantial experience. Junior defensive tackle Derek Wolfe and junior linebacker J.K. Schaffer have all-conference potential, and Drew Frey is a fIxture at strong safety. Jones is expecting big things from defensive end Dan Giordano and linebacker Walter Stewart.

2010 Cincinnati Special Teams:

Hazelton and running back Darrin Williams, who returned a kickoff for a touchdown last season, will compete for the chance to replace Gilyard, the Big East’s Special Teams Player of the Year in 2009 after he returned two kickoffs for touchdowns. Jake Rogers returns to kick field goals after a decent season. Rogers also punted last year, but could forfeit that job to sophomore Patrick O’Donnell.

2010 Cincinnati Predictions:

The Bearcats have won 18 straight regular-season games and back-to-back Big East titles. Simply maintaining the status quo will be a huge undertaking for Jones, who received positive early reviews by being more player-friendly and accessible than Kelly was. That’s nice for the players, but will it translate to victories?
