While the 2010 NCAA college football season does not start for a couple of months it is not too early to take a look at each of the major conferences to see which teams have the best chance to end up in this year’s BCS Championship Game. Today we take a look at all the teams in the Big East Conference along with their current odds to win a national title.

Big East Preview

Pittsburgh

Pittsburgh – Current odds to win a National Championship: 50-1

2009- Overall record 10-3     Conference record 5-2        Home 6-1   Away 4-2

Pittsburgh 2010 Outlook – With only returning 11 starters returning from last year’s team, Pitt has some big holes to fill but remains confident that they can win the Big East in 2010. One huge plus for the offense is that their leading rusher from last season, Dion Lewis is back. Lewis ran for close to 1,800 last season and is primed for another big year in 2010. Also returning is WR Jonathan Baldwin, who led the team in receiving yards with 1,111 yards. It appears that QB Tino Sunseri will be the starter on opening day after an impressive spring practice. With DE’s Greg Romeus and Jabaal Sheard returning, the Panthers are loaded up front and should have one of the best defenses in the conference.

South Florida

South Florida - BSC Championship Odds: 75-1

2009- Overall record 8-5     Conference record 3-4         Home 4-2   Away 4-3

South Florida 2010 Outlook – The good news for South Florida is that they will have QB B.J. Daniels back. Last season he led the team in both passing (1,983 yards) and rushing (772 yards) and actually should have enough weapons around him to put up even bigger numbers this season. The Bulls defense will struggle to fill the void of DE Jason Pierre-Paul and their leading tackler LB Kion Wilson, but have some decent young talent ready to step up and fill the void. New head coach Skip Holtz is confident that his team will compete for this season for a conference championship, but in reality it could be step backwards for the Bulls in 2010.

West Virginia

West Virginia - BCS Championship Odds: 80-1

2009- Overall record 9-4     Conference record 5-2         Home 7-0    Away 2-4

West Virginia 2010 Outlook – West Virginia returns 18 starters from last year’s team and should be one of the favorites to win the conference in 2010. RB Noel Devine (1.465 rushing yards) and WR Jock Sanders (688 receiving yards), two vital components of last year’s offense are back and ready to pick up where they left off. QB Geno Smith will most likely be the starter, but sophomore Coley White had a solid spring and appears ready to step in if needed. The defense led by Julian Miller and Scooter Berry up front and Robert Sands in the secondary is solid throughout and should be one of the best in the conference.

Cincinnati

Cincinnati - BCS Championship Odds: 100-1

2009- Overall record 12-1       Conference record 7-0        Home 6-0   Away 6-1

Cincinnati 2010 Outlook – Cincinnati’s championship team from last season returns 14 starters giving new head coach Butch Jones a chance to make another run at the Big East title. RB Isaiah Pead, who led the team in rushing with 806 yards, is back. Zach Collaros takes over for Tony Pike at QB as he is already creating some excitement after a solid spring. One of his favorite targets will most likely be WR Armon Binns. The main problem for this team will be on the defensive side of the ball. They have questionable depth at a number of positions after losing a number of key starters. It is hard to see another perfect run through the conference for the Bearcats in 2010.

Rutgers

Rutgers - BCS Championship Odds: 100-1

2009- Overall record 9-4       Conference record 3-4         Home 5-3     Away 4-1

Rutgers 2010 Outlook – On offense, last year’s starting QB Tom Savage will be back after throwing for 2,211 yards as a freshman last season. One of his primary targets will be WR Mohamed Sanu. They will also have RB Joe Martinek, who led the team in rushing with 967 yards in 2010 and Kordell Young, who is returning from a knee injury. The real strength of this Rutgers’ team will be their defense with players like DE Alex Silvestro and DT Scott Vallone up front, LB Antonio Lowery, and Joe Lefeged in the secondary. Head coach Greg Shiano has this team poised to be in the thick of things in 2010.

Connecticut

Connecticut - BCS Championship Odds: 150-1

2009- Overall record 8-5      Conference record 3-4         Home 5-2     Away 3-3

Connecticut 2010 Outlook – Connecticut returns 16 starters from last season with two of the most important ones on offense being QB Zach Frazer (1,461 yards passing) and RB Jordan Todman (1,188 yards rushing). WR’s Kashif Moore and Isiah Moore will be Frazer’s primary targets along with TE Ryan Griffin as this offense should have little problem moving the ball. Despite the fact that the Huskies have eight starters returning on defense, their secondary appeared to be a glowing weakness this spring and could end up being their downfall as the season wears on.

Louisville

Louisville – BCS Championship Odds: OFF

2009- Overall record 4-8        Conference record 1-6      Home 4-2    Away 0-6

Louisville 2010 Outlook – Nine starters return on offense including QB Adam Froman, who threw for 1,354 yards in 2009 and RB Victor Anderson, who led the team with 473 yards rushing. Louisville brought in Charlie Strong as their new head coach with the primary goal of changing the losing culture of this program. He will need to rely on his player’s heart and will to win as in reality; this team just does not have the talent to effectively compete at this level.

Syracuse

Syracuse – BCS Championship Odds: OFF

2009- Overall record 4-8         Conference record 1-6            Home 4-4     Away 0-4

Syracuse 2010 Outlook – With only 10 starters returning from last year’s team, it will be a whole new look for this team in 2010. One key returning player is RB Delone Carter. Carter led the team with 1,021 rushing yards last season. Either Ryan Nassib or Charley Loeb will get the call at QB for the Orange. On defense they have some decent depth at linebacker with the likes of Derrell Smith and Doug Hogue but there are some major question marks in with the defensive line. All in all it looks like another long year for Syracuse.
