2009 Record: 7-6 ACC Record: 4-4 2010 Returning Starters: 15: 9 Offense, 4 Defense, Kicker, Punter

Coach: Jimbo Fisher (Florida State and overall: 0-0, 1st year)

Offensive Coordinators: James Coley Defensive Coordinators: Mark Stoops

2010 Florida State Players to Watch: QB Christian Ponder, TB Jermaine Thomas, 06 Rodney Hudson, WR Bert Reed, LB Nigel Bradham, KDustin Hopkins, CB-KR Greg Reid, DT Jacobbi McDaniel

2010 Florida State Strengths:
The Seminoles return almost 90 percent of their offensive production from 2009. It starts with Ponder, who Is rated among the top returning senior Quarterbacks by NFL scouts. He’s fully recovered from shoulder surgery. The kicking game is strong. The schedule appears favorable.

2010 Florida State Weaknesses:
The maligned defense has been overhauled, complete with anew scheme, anew coordinator, two other new assistant coaches and numerous depth chart changes. How all this meshes Is uncertain. Some of FSU’s defensive weaknesses can only be addressed through better recruiting.

2010 Florida State Offense:

The Seminoles have an offense that most teams in the country would envy. They are intact, experienced and coming off their most productive season in eight years. The optimism starts at quarterback with senior Christian Ponder, a third-year starter. He was on Heisman Trophy watch lists last season until separating his shoulder in the ninth game. That injury likely kept him from entering the NFL Draft, but it enables him to work on a post-graduate degree. The entire line returns for a second consecutive year. It is led by senior guard Rodney Hudson, a highly regarded NFL prospect. In the spring, the Seminoles had five players battle for the starting tailback job, but the top two candidates are junior Jermaine Thomas, who led the team last year in rushing, and Chris Thompson, who excelled over Thomas in the spring. The receiving corps, while lacking a game-breaker, is solid. Bert Reed has been the most productive and worked hard last year on becoming more consistent, dependable. The Seminoles hope junior Jarmon Fortson, who has great size and speed, can live up to his potential. He’s only shown flashes, such as the spectacular one-handed, leaping catch he made against West Virginia in the Gator Bowl.

2010 Florida State Defense:

One of Jimbo Fisher’s first moves as FSU’s new head coach was to lure Mark Stoops from Arizona, where he was working as defensive coordinator for older brother, Mike. In replacing long-time coordinator Mickey Andrews, Mark Stoops installed a new defensive scheme, based more on zone coverages and zone blitzes, and tried to shore up the glaring deficiencies at defensive end and cornerback. The biggest graduation loss was in the secondary. Cornerback Patrick Robinson was the final pick in the first round of the NFL Draft. Meanwhile, the Seminoles will start the preseason with youth at cornerback Sophomore Greg Reid, who made his mark last year as a punt returner and fill-in corner, will assume a full-time role at cornerback. Redshirt freshman Xavier Rhodes impressed enough to leave spring as the other No.1 corner.

2010 Florida State Special Teams:

Placekicker Dustin Hopkins shook off freshman jitters last season to make 11 of 13 field-goal attempts from inside 40 yards. He set an FSU bowl record with four field goals, including a 52-yarder. Shawn Powell was the ACC’s second-best punter last season and consistently pinned teams inside their 20 from shorter range. Greg Reid led the nation in punt returns (18.4 yards per attempt) and was one of the ACC’s top kickoff returners.

2010 Florida State Predictions:

The Seminoles have not appeared in such good shape since the start of the 2000 season. If they get renewed defensive muscle, they could easily make a run at the ACC Atlantic division title and play in the league title game for the first time in five years. The coaching staff is revamped, a new philosophy is in place, and FSU seems poised to head upward with a strong core of returning starters.
