2009 Record: 11-3 ACC Record: 7-3 (ACC Champions) 2010 Returning Starters: 16: 6 Offense, 8 Defense, Kicker, Punter

Coach: Paul Johnson (Georgia Tech and overall: 20-7, 2 years)

Offensive Coordinators: Paul Johnson Defensive Coordinators: Al Groh

2010 Georgia Tech Players to Watch: QB Joshua Nesbitt, FB Anthony Allen, HB Roddy Jones, CB/PR Jerrard Tarrant, LB Brad Jefferson, LB Steven Sylvester, K Scott Blair

2010 Georgia Tech Strengths:
The offense should be as potent as ever, as long as Nesbitt – who is as tough mentally as he is physically – stays healthy. Allen should step right in for RB Jonathan Dwyer, who was 2008 ACC Offensive Player of the Year. Tech’s defense is talented and experienced at linebacker and in the secondary.

2010 Georgia Tech Weaknesses:
The Yellow Jackets lack depth at quarterback, adangerous situation given the number of hits Nesbitt takes when running the option. Georgia Tech’s pass rush is another question. Defensive end Derrick Morgan left early for the NFL and has no heir apparent, although the scheme change to a 3-4 should alleviate some concerns.

2010 Georgia Tech Offense:

Georgia Tech dominated last season by executing its scheme and hogging the ball. The Yellow Jackets averaged 56 rushes per game and ranked third nationally in time of possession. Barring injury to quarterback Josh Nesbitt, the Jackets should repeat those numbers this fall. The learning curve for the double-slot option has flattened out. The offense is stocked with veterans, led by Nesbitt, a third-year starter. His options on the option are numerous. Veteran Anthony Allen inherits the feature back role from Jonathan Dwyer, one of four Tech players taken in the 2010 NFL Draft. Georgia Tech’s slotbacks own a shared talent: Speed. Roddy Jones is healthy after struggling with injuries last season. The bumps and bruises cost Jones a chance to build on his 2008 showing, which included a 200-yard rushing game against rival Georgia. The running game should get a boost from a more experienced line, led by center Sean Bedford. The concern is what happens if Nesbitt gets injured. He missed spring practice while recovering from ankle surgery. His backup, Jaybo Shaw, transferred to Georgia Southern, leaving a sophomore and two freshmen competing for the backup job. Sophomore Tevin Washington impressed during spring practice, but was still trying to grasp the option’s nuances.

2010 Georgia Tech Defense:

The Jackets switched coordinators – and schemes. Coach Paul Johnson hired former Virginia head coach Al Groh to install his 3-4 alignment. Groh’s 3-4 scheme fits Georgia Tech’s personnel. The Yellow Jackets are slim on the line and deep at linebacker. Their linebackers have the versatility to move up to the line of scrimmage and rush, and can also deftly drop into coverage. Outside linebackers Anthony Egbuniwe and Anthony Barnes have the potential to haunt opposing offenses. Egbuniwe played defensive end last year at 250 pounds. Moving back with the scheme change should help free him up to make plays. Barnes is among the team’s best athletes. The secondary returns three starters, although Groh has shuffled some personnel. Jerrard Tarrant, a ball-hawking playmaker, moved to safety from cornerback, swapping spots with Dominique Reese. Mario Butler returns as a shutdown corner. The most pressing question is how quickly Groh can get the defense installed. He introduced the basic package, including four sets, during 15 spring practices. But even the defenders admitted their knowledge is still raw headed into the preseason.

2010 Georgia Tech Special Teams:

Jerrard Tarrant returned two punts for scores in 2009 and averaged 13 yards per return. Georgia Tech’s specialists – kicker Scott Blair and punter Chandler Anderson – have delivered when called upon.

2010 Georgia Tech Predictions:

The Yellow Jackets should again contend for an ACC title despite losing four early entries to the NFL Draft – including two fIrst-rounders. The expectations are a testament to Johnson’s coaching abilities. Nesbitt’s experience, and improvement along the offensive line, where Johnson prefers athletic and agile blockers, should result in points. To have a truly special season, though, Groh must work some magic with the defense.
