With the 2010 NCAA college football season starting next weekend it is time to take a look at the last group of college teams; Major Independents. Notre Dame has odds of 35/1 to win the BSC title as listed by Bovada.com but there are no individual BCS odds to win a national title posted for Army or Navy so they would all fall into the category of ‘the field` at 25/1.

Independents Previews

Navy Midshipmen – Current odds to win a National Championship: 25/1

2009- Overall record 10-4     Home 6-1   Away 4-3

Navy 2010 Outlook – Navy’s football program has been on quite a roll for most of the past decade. It has been to seven straight bowl games and even more importantly has a 15 game winning streak over the other two Service Academies (Army and Air Force) dating all the way back to 2002.

Continued success in 2010 is a strong possibility as the Midshipmen return seven starters on offense from last season including quarterback Ricky Dobbs. As the ultimate double threat, Dobbs threw for 1,031 yards and six TD’s but more impressively he ran for 1,192 yards and set an NCAA record for rushing touchdowns by a QB with 27. Also back to further help the rushing game is FB Vince Murray, who ran for 971 yards in 2009 and RB Marcus Curry, who ran for 585.

With only five starters returning on defense, there will be several holes to fill, but there still is a solid nucleus of players up front led by Chase Burger and in the secondary with Wyatt Middleton.

Notre Dame Fighting Irish - BSC Championship Odds: 35/1

2009- Overall record 6-6     Home 5-3   Away 1-3

Notre Dame 2010 Outlook – The Bob Kelly era is underway in South Bend as the former Cincinnati head coach takes over a program that has underperformed the last several seasons. The main thing he will bring the Notre Dame is a much more balanced attack on offense as opposed to former coach Charlie Weis’s pro-style aerial assault.

Dwayne Christ should get the call as the starting quarterback, but the Irish have Nate Montana (Joe’s son) as another option should Christ struggle. They will also have a solid trio of skill position players in RB Armando Allen Jr., WR Michael Floyd, and TE Kyle Rudolph. Allen led the team last year in rushing with 687 yards and Floyd was second in receiving behind Golden Tate with 44 catches for 795 yards.

Where Kelly’s influence should have an immediate impact is on the defensive side of the ball. To help his cause, Notre Dame returns its entire front seven from last season including LB Manti Te’o. The secondary could still be an area of concern as the Irish will have to replace most of the starters from 2009.

Army Black Knights - BCS Championship Odds: 25/1

2009- Overall record 5-7     Home 3-3    Away 2-4

Army 2010 Outlook – Under first year Head Coach Rich Ellerson, Army returned to respectability in 2009 by posting a 5-7 record. Much like their arch rival Navy, the Black Nights will rely on a punishing running game and a solid defense as their primary recipe for winning games.

Back is QB Trent Steelman, who only passed for 637 yards but led the team in rushing with 706 yards on 202 carries. They will also have RB’s Patrick Mealy and Kingsley Ehie, who combined for close to 1,200 yards on the ground in 2009. One player to watch in the limited passing game is 6’10” WR Alejandro Villanueva, who led the team last year with 522 receiving yards and scored five TD’s.

The Army defense should once again be fairly solid as it returns eight starters from 2009 including DT Mike Gann and LB Steve Anderson.
