2009 Record: 2-10 ACC Record: 1-7 2010 Returning Starters: 13: 6 Offense, 5 Defense, Kicker, Punter

Coach: Ralph Friedgen (Maryland and overall: 66-46, 9 years)

Offensive Coordinators: James Franklin Defensive Coordinators: Don Brown

2010 Maryland Players to Watch: QB Jamarr Robinson, RB Da’Rel Scott, WR Torrey Smith, LB Alex Wujclak, DT AJ. Francis, FS Kenny Tate, PTravis Baltz

2010 Maryland Strengths:
Maryland has an impressive stable of experienced tailbacks, and each brings different skills to the table. Scott Is a breakaway threat; junior Davin Meggett is a powerful Inside runner and sophomore Caleb Porzel is an elusive scatback type. Wujclak anchors alinebacker corps that Is deep and talented.

2010 Maryland Weaknesses:
An inexperienced offensive line is anchored by two former walk-ons – Paul Pinegar (center) and Andrew Gonnella (left guard) – and features three sophomores. Recruiting mistakes, attrition and graduation have left that unit thin. There are similar youth, Inexperience and depth concerns in the secondary, which lost all four starters.

2010 Maryland Offense:

Jamarr Robinson is the most athletic quarterback of the Ralph Friedgen era, and offensive coordinator James Franklin intends to take advantage of his skills by incorporating some speed option, designed draws and sprint-out plays. Robinson, who runs the 4o-yard dash in 4.5 seconds and has the moves to make defenders miss, scrambled for 129 yards against Virginia Tech last season. Tailback Da’Rel Scott was named nrst-team All-ACC after rushing for 1,133 yards as a sophomore, but he had a disappointing junior campaign – missing five games with a broken wrist and developing a fumbling problem. Junior Davin Meggett has proven to be a tough, powerful inside runner with the ability to make defenders miss. He has a total of 816 yards and 10 touchdowns in his first two seasons. Wide receiver Torrey Smith is the team’s most dangerous weapon, and Franklin needs to find ways to get him more involved in the offense. The speedy junior already ranks fifth in school history with 3,617 all-purpose yards, but most of that has come on kickoff returns. He had 61 receptions for 824 yards and five touchdowns last season.

2010 Maryland Defense:

Maryland is hoping improved speed will lead to more big plays. Second-year coordinator Don Brown installed an attacking style last season, but it did not create the type of havoc (in terms of sacks and turnovers) he envisioned. Middle linebacker Alex Wujciak is a two-time All-ACC selection and likely NFL Draft pick after accumulating 264 tackles over the past two seasons: Strongside linebacker Adrian Moten (13 career sacks) has been one of the team’s most consistent performers the past two seasons, while weakside starter Demetrius Hartsfield (ACC All-Freshman team) was one of the stars of spring practice. A.J. Francis, the returning starter at nose tackle, showed signs of developing into a dominant force during spring drills. Fellow tackle Joe Vellano was named the most valuable and most improved player by Friedgen. Corners are often left in man-to-man coverage in Brown’s aggressive scheme, and Cameron Chism was up to the task last season, recording a teamhigh four interceptions and four pass breakups.

2010 Maryland Special Teams:

Nick Ferrara seized the placekicking job as a true freshman, making 18 of 25 field-goal attempts. He has a strong, accurate leg. Senior Travis Baltz is looking to re-establish himself as one of the nation’s top punters after missing part of last season with injuries. He boasts a career average of 40.9 yards and was selected first-team All-ACC as a sophomore.

2010 Maryland Predictions:

Athletic director Debbie Yow has made it clear that a winning record is needed in order for the Friedgen regime to continue. That would require a dramatic turnaround following a disastrous 2-10 campaign that the head coach blamed on massive inexperience, costly injuries and ineffective schemes. There is some talent in the program, but a lot of things need to come together in order for the Terps to reach six victories.
