2009 Record: 9-4 ACC Record: 5-3 2010 Returning Starters: 16: 6 Offense, 8 Defense, Kicker, Punter

Coach: Randy Shannon (Miami and overall: 21-17, 3 years)

Offensive Coordinators: Mark Whipple Defensive Coordinators: John Lovett

2010 Miami Players to Watch: QB Jacory Harris, WR Leonard Hankerson, WR/PR Travis Benjamin, WR LaRon Byrd, DE Allen Bailey, DT Micanor Regis, LB Colin McCarthy, CB Brandon Harris

2010 Miami Strengths:
The passing game is led by honors candidate Jacory Harris, and his receivers have anice combination of length and speed. Miami also boasts adeep set of running backs and one of the nation’s top defensive lines. The defense is fast. And Matt Bosher is the best kicker-punter combo In the nation.

2010 Miami Weaknesses:
The offensive line lost three starters and lacks depth. Colin McCarthy may have to move to middle linebacker. Overall, the linebacker unit lacks depth. The defensive backs have picked off only seven passes in the past two seasons.

2010 Miami Offense:

After throwing for more than 3,000 yards last year, Jacory Harris is poised to be one of the nation’s top quarterbacks. The junior, in his second season with offensive coordinator Mark Whipple, is better-prepared to handle the mental and physical rigors of the job. The 6-4 Harris, who didn’t start throwing this offseason until May after having thumb surgery, came to Miami at 168 pounds. Now, he’s close to 190. For Harris, the big key is cutting down on his 17 interceptions in 2009. Harris’ receiving corps is tall, quick and fast. After combining for 78 catches last season, Leonard Hankerson and LaRon Byrd should team up for 100-plus this season. Travis Benjamin, who darts among the defense, needs the ball in his hands three to five times a game. There’s not a lot of depth or experience at tight end. A deep tailback group – Damien Berry, Lamar Miller, Mike James, Storm Johnson – might be bolstered by the return of Graig Cooper, who initially was feared lost for the season after tearing the ACL in his right knee in the bowl game. He was recovering well heading into summer.

2010 Miami Defense:

Strength and conditioning coach Andreu Swasey compares this Miami defense to the 2002 team that lost to Ohio State in the national title game and had three first-round NFL draft picks and six players in the top five rounds. The line, which goes eight deep or more, is led by Allen Bailey, a 288-pounder with 4.6 speed. Others to watch are Curtis Porter and Micanor Regis. The group needs to force more third-and-Iongs and register more sacks and turnovers. Sean Spence has added bulk to his frame and should anchor the linebacking unit with Colin McCarthy. There’s no lack of speed in the secondary. AllAmerican Brandon Harris competed in track. So did fellow defensive backs Cory Nelms, DeMarcus Van Dyke and Brandon McGee, who formed threefourths of a 400-met~r relay team that clocked at 40.15 seconds, the fastest by a Miami relay team since 1998.

2010 Miami Special Teams:

Matt Bosher has one of the top feet in the country. As a sophomore, he was team MVP. As a junior, he was a Lou Groza Award semifmalist and earned first-team All-ACC honors as a kicker and second team as a punter. He has made all 90 extra-point attempts, is 32 of 36 on field goal attempts and has 27 punts of 50 or more yards. The Hurricanes need a more explosive return game. Thearon Collier (13.2-yard punt return average, two touchdowns) gave a taste last season. Travis Benjamin also is a returner.
