2009 Record: 5-7 Big 10 Record: 1-7 2010 Returning Starters: 15: 7 Offense, 8 Defense

Coach: Rich Rodriguez (Michigan: 8-16, 2 years)

Offensive Coordinators: Calvin Magee Defensive Coordinators: Greg Robinson

2010 Michigan Players to Watch: QB Tate Forcier, QB Denard Robinson, WR Roy Roundtree, NT Mike Martin, LB Craig Roh, CB Troy Woolfolk

2010 Michigan Strengths:
For the first time, Michigan won’t have a first-year quarterback running Rodriguez’s spread option system. The Wolverines have a talented defensive line that will need to replace Brandon Graham, a first-round NFL draft pick. Roh, a sophomore, is an emerging playmaker at linebacker.

2010 Michigan Weaknesses:
The kicking and punting situations remain unsettled. The linebacking corps is returning fifth-year seniors Obi Ezeh and Jonas Mouton, but neither played to potential ayear ago, leaving ahole in the middle. Their improvement is critical for Michigan in 2010.

2010 Michigan Offense:

Michigan will have a quarterback with at least a year’s experience in Rich Rodriguez’s offense in 2010. The main question is who? He could either go with returning starter Tate Forcier or fellow sophomore Denard Robinson, who is the fastest player on the team and has drawn comparisons to former Rodriguez disciple Pat White. At running back, Michigan has a good group of blockers and a couple of sturdy runners in Vincent Smith and Fitzgerald Toussaint. Michael Shaw and Mike Cox also bring experience to the position. The Wolverines have experienced wide receivers in returners Roy Roundtree, Junior Hemingway and Martavious Odoms, along with a decent tight end in Kevin Koger. On the line, Michigan has two dynamic players – guard Stephen Schilling and center David Molk – surrounded by question marks.

2010 Michigan Defense:

Michigan is breaking in a new 3-3-5 scheme but has the same coordinator, Greg Robinson. He has to replace Michigan’s three best defenders from a year ago. Brandon Graham is gone to the NFL, but the defensive line may be the Wolverines’ deepest position. Ryan Van Bergen and Mike Martin anchor the line as two of Michigan’s better defensive players. Sophomore Will Campbell should also be expected to make strides after a decent freshman year. Michigan will have a lot of experience at linebacker. Jonas Mouton and Obi Ezeh are fifth-year seniors and the third linebacker – sophomore Craig Roh – is a budding star after a good rookie year. As Mouton and Ezeh struggled in 2009, it allowed Michigan to play Kevin Leach and J.B. Fitzgerald, consequently developing more depth and experience in 2010. The secondary has concerns as cornerback Donovan Warren left early and went undrafted. Besides senior cornerback Troy Woolfolk, most of the secondary will be freshmen and sophomores. The coaches think they have talent in safety Cam Gordon, and cornerbacks J.T. Floyd and Justin Turner.

2010 Michigan Special Teams:

Michigan has to replace its starting kicker, Jason Olesnavage, and starting punter, Zoltan Mesko. True freshman Will Hagerup is almost a sure bet to see the field as the replacement for Mesko. Olesnavage’s job is up for grabs, but Hagerup and redshirt freshman Brendan Gibbons will be competing for the spot. Jeremy Gallon and Darryl Stonum will be the likely returners; both possess the proper speed.

2010 Michigan Predictions:

This is a make-or-break year for coach Rich Rodriguez, in his third season and without a bowl appearance. Michigan hadn’t missed a bowl two years in a row since the Big Ten started allowing teams to play in consecutive bowls. The potential is there for an improved team with a more experienced quarterback and more depth throughout the roster. That said, there are still a lot of questions – mainly in the secondary and within the linebacking corps. While the linebackers have experience, they underperformed last season. Rodriguez’s future may hang with how much the defense grasps its new 3-3-5 scheme.
