Today we take a look at all the teams in the Big 10 Conference along with their current odds to win a national title.

Big 10 Preview

Ohio State

Ohio State – Current odds to win a National Championship: 6-1

2009- Overall record 11-2     Conference record 7-1        Home 6-1   Away 5-1

Ohio State 2010 Outlook – Ohio State has 15 starters returning from last year’s team; 10 on offense and five on defense. The biggest returning star is QB Terrelle Pryor, who in 2009 threw for 2,094 yards and ran for 779 more. Three other key elements of the Buckeye’s offense include RB’s Brandon Saine and Dan Herron along with WR Devier Posey. Posey was the team’s leading receiver last season with 828 yards. On defense, LB’s Ross Homan and Brian Rolle will be back along with Etienne Sabino. All this returning talent as well as the addition of some strong recruits should add up to another Big 10 championship run for the Buckeyes.

Iowa

Iowa - BSC Championship Odds: 20-1

2009- Overall record 11-2     Conference record 6-2         Home 6-1   Away 5-1

Iowa 2010 Outlook – Iowa returns 14 starters from last year’s team. The Hawkeye’s offense should be loaded as QB Ricky Stanzi; who led the team with 2417 passing yards, RB Adam Robison; who led the team with 834 rushing yards, and WR Derrell Johnson- Koulianos; who led the team with 750 receiving yards are all back. These three should provide a solid offensive base to once again challenge Ohio State for a conference title. DE Adrian Clayborn is the undisputed leader of this defense and along with DT Karl Klug and LB Jeff Tarpinian make Iowa extremely strong on this side of the ball as well.

Penn State

Penn State - BCS Championship Odds: 25-1

2009- Overall record 11-2     Conference record 6-2         Home 6-2    Away 5-0

Penn State 2010 Outlook – Penn State lost almost half their starting class from last season but they still have RB Evan Royster and WR’s Derek Moye and Graham Zug to provide the necessary veteran leadership in 2010. Royster led the team with 1,169 rushing yards last season and is primed for an even bigger role in the Nittany Lions offense this year. Moye should also be a force after leading the team in receiving with 785 yards in 2009. At quarterback, look for true freshman Paul Jones to possibly get the starting nod as he was extremely impressive in spring practice. Despite losing Jared Odrick, Penn State’s line; led by Jack Crawford will still be the main strength of this defense.

Wisconsin

Wisconsin - BCS Championship Odds: 40-1

2009- Overall record 10-3       Conference record 5-3        Home 7-1   Away 3-2

Wisconsin 2010 Outlook – With 10 starters returning on offense including QB Scott Tolzien, RB John Clay, and WR Nick Toon, Wisconsin is still loaded on that side of the ball. Clay led the team in rushing with 1,517 yards, while Toon was their leading receiver with 805 yards. Tolzien threw for over 2,700 yards and 16 TD’s to lead the Badgers high powered offense. Defense, on the other hand could be an area of concern as there are several new faces in the starting lineup especially in the secondary. If this unit can quickly come together, Wisconsin should be in for another strong year.

Northwestern

Northwestern - BCS Championship Odds: 100-1

2009- Overall record 8-5       Conference record 5-3         Home 5-2     Away 3-3

Northwestern 2010 Outlook – A good chunk of Northwestern’s team from 2009 remains intact as 13 starters from last season have returned for 2010. The strongest core of players will be on defense as LB’s Quentin Davie and Nate Williams as well as CB Sherrick McManis and S Brad Phillips are all back. Dan Persa is expected to be the starting quarterback and expectations are running high that he has all the tools to successfully step in and run the Wildcats offense.

Michigan State

Michigan State - BCS Championship Odds: 100-1

2009- Overall record 6-7      Conference record 4-4         Home 4-3     Away 2-4

Michigan State 2010 Outlook – The good news for Michigan State is that they will have QB Kirk Cousins back for another season. Cousins led the team with 2,680 passing yards last season completing over 60% of his passes. They will also have RB’s Larry Caper and Edwin Baker. Caper led the team last season with 468 rushing yards, while Baker added another 427 yards of his own. There are some question marks on the defensive side of the ball for the Spartans especially in the secondary where there will be several new faces in the lineup.

Purdue

Purdue – BCS Championship Odds: OFF

2009- Overall record 5-7        Conference record 4-4      Home 3-4    Away 2-3

Purdue 2010 Outlook – Purdue lost 10 starters from last year’s team, but the good news is that RB Ralph Bolden and WR Keith Smith are back. Bolden led the team in rushing with 935 yards and Smith had 1,100 yards receiving and caught six TD’s. LB’s Joe Holland and Jason Werner along with DE’s Kawann Short and Ryan Kerrigan are back to provide a solid core of experience on the defensive side of the ball.

Minnesota

Minnesota – BCS Championship Odds: OFF

2009- Overall record 6-7         Conference record 3-5            Home 4-3     Away 2-4

Minnesota 2010 Outlook – Minnesota will have the school’s “all-time passing yards leader” QB Adam Weber back for one more season. Last year he threw for 2,582 yards but only completed a little over 50% of his attempts. If he struggles this season do not be surprised if MarQueis Gray gets the call. RB Duane Bennett should carry the load out of the backfield. Last season he rushed for only 376 yards but the Gophers expect him to have an expanded role in the offense this year.

Illinois

Illinois – BCS Championship Odds: 100-1

2009- Overall record 3-9         Conference record 2-5            Home 4-3     Away 1-4

Illinois 2010 Outlook – Illinois returns only 11 starters from last year’s team so there are some serious question marks on both sides of the ball. One key player returning is RB Mikel LeShoure, who led the team with 734 rushing yards last season. WR A.J. Jenkins will have the tall task of replacing the production of Arrelious Benn, but he will have help from returning wide out Jarred Fayson. As of now it looks like redshirt freshman Nathan Scheelhaase will get the call as the Fighting Illini starting QB.

Michigan

Michigan – BCS Championship Odds: 60-1

2009- Overall record 5-7         Conference record 1-7            Home 5-3     Away 0-4

Michigan 2010 Outlook – Michigan returns two solid quarterbacks in Tate Forcier and Denard Robinson. After an impressive spring it appears that Robinson will get the nod as the starter, but Forcier could still get the call somewhere down the line. One of the biggest holes on defense the Wolverines will need to fill is the loss of DE Brandon Graham, who proved to be a one man wrecking crew last season. In his absence, Ryan Van Bergen, Mike Martin, and Craig Roh will be looked upon to all help to fill the void.

Indiana

Indiana – BCS Championship Odds: OFF

2009- Overall record 4-8         Conference record 1-7            Home 3-3     Away 1-5

Indiana 2010 Outlook – Indiana returns eight starters on offense including QB Ben Chappell. Chappell will have his two favorite targets; WR’s Tandon Doss and Darmelo Blancher back as well. Last season Chappell threw for close to 3,000 yards and Doss led all receivers with 962 yards. DE Adam Replogle will lead the Hoosier’s defense as they transition to a 3-4 scheme in 2010.
